Originally, in the cartoon/comics/toy line

On an alien machine world, there are two factions of a race of cybernetic organisms fighting for control of the planet. One is the Autobots, a peaceful group who lack advanced combat capabilities.

The other is the Deceptions, a warmongering group who are equipped with powerful weapons. The Autobots attempt to flee annihilation on a starship but are followed through space by the Deceptions, crashlanding on a small planet called Earth millions of years in the past. When they awaken, the Decepticons use their abilities to hide as military vehicles & steal Earth's energy to return to Cybertron (their homeworld) & bring about the destruction of both the Autobots & humans, conquering Earth for its vast stores of Energon (their fuel & food).

The Autobots in turn disguise themselves as civillian vehicles and eventually form an alliance with Earth's people to defend the planet (their new home) against the evil Decepticons. All is going well until Megatron (the Decepticon leader) establishes communication with his main army on Cybertron & is able to link up with them via a "Space Bridge", beckoning dozens of evil robots to Earth before the gateway is severed.....

Over time, more of the scattered Autobots respond to a distress signal and the activation of the Space Bridge, coming to Earth's aid.

The Bay movies have a very different plot. Later in the original lore, they established that the Autobots and Decepticons are fighting over a "Matrix of Leadership" which is what makes Optimus Prime (the Autobot leader) so incredibly powerful. In the Bay lore, that became the "All-Spark" and a device which allows the creation of new Transformers. Very dangerous. The All-Spark was hidden on Earth, where Megatron personally tracked it down, but he encountered a problem and crash-landed in the frozen poles.

When he is discovered by Earth's people, they reverse engineer his body and create digital technology, eventually drawing the attention of more Transformers (both good and bad). I prefer the original lore, but love the espionage and conspiracy elements from the Bay films (Robots In Disguise!) because it fits the bill. Between them and a little Beast Wars, I think the most perfect tale has yet to be told. Basically, Bay treats them more like traditional extraterrestrials and later even ties itself into Arthurian lore. It's a cool ride.

The comics get crazy too with the Alpha prime or whatchamacallit and Time Travel and Unicron

But actually, it was about the Fallen, the original decepticon, who wanted to use Earth's son for energy in like 10,000 BC so the other ancient prime transformers sacrificed their lives to save the planet. One of the pyramids had a sun harvester inside it.

But actually, all of that was part of a conspiracy by Sentinel Prime and Megatron, who had hidden a bunch of decepticons on the moon some time before the first two movies, and they were biding their time for the true plan. To teleport cybertron to Earth so that they could harvest Earth for planet materials and revive cybertron.
