After playing a lot of games that do 3, I love when a game has 4.

Suikoden games almost always have 6 and BoF 4 let you swap people while in battle which was really nice.

Honestly 4 is the best number. 3 feels too restrictive at times, and 5 feels like it's an overload.

This is why really liked DQXI you could switch inactive party members in battle at the start of your turn and not lose a turn

I don't mind if there's limits to the party members but I wish more games allowed some party members to just be "inactive" but still in the party instead of being left on the ship or something

Because then I go to a cutscene and I want to go back with other characters because I want to know what the other characters would've said in the cutscene and so I have to kinda start over

Yeah this this this. I am not replaying a game just to cycle through flavor text. Just have the cutscenes where the characters are all present at once.

This is also why I prefer a nice small intimate number of playable characters in a game, rather than an absurd number like 40+ or a certain series with over 100 mostly pointless party members.

It gives you room for your warrior, healer, mage, and wildcard (often rogue).

I think this is a contributing factor to why Chrono Cross feels like such a dud compared to the original. Instead of focusing on a few party members they give us 10 times as many with a twentieth of the personality or story.

There any games where you have about twice as many characters as the party limit, but it actually forces you to use both "teams" often throughout the game? Most games that do this only ever do it a few times, but I would like to try a game where the party splits up a lot and you have some control over the group composition.

you mean 1. there are double and triple battles, but you generally only have 1 active party member at a time.

Radiant Historia kind of.

You have to bounce back and forth between alternative time lines and each timeline you have a different party minus 3 characters that are always in both parties.

Yeah exactly. And gameplay wise, it's annoying because instead of 4 party members you can only have 3 at a time, and really virtually just 1 due to reasons, so it's 40 useless party members with barely any personality.

After finally playing Chrono Cross, it boggled my mind how it got a 10 from sites like gamespot 20 years ago

arcanum lets you walk around with 7 party members (5 w/ max charisma, 1 with persuasion, and you can get a dog too if you save it).

fallout 2 you can have 5 party members. although there a glitch where the cyberdog will become a member even if you are already at the limit by killing the scientist dude right off the bat without entering dialogue. so making 6. then there that glitch that occurs after you have sex with mrs bishop that allow you to get all the party members (so 14).

Because of the ps1 era's ambition in 3d graphics, a lot of games decided to do 3-party members because otherwise they would sacrifice load times to have more party members, hence why games like FF 9 are borderline unplayable due to 8+ second load times every battle transition and stuff like that.

As graphics began to peak, focus on performance was once again restored
