I'm training the newbies at work and I dont know if they're playing dumb but they're literally typing... with one or two fingers at a time. Their excel and basic office use must also be limited because they couldn't even insert a new column...

And its just little things I notice, like how they're not really familiar with shortcut commands (and I'm no expert, just talking about basic ones like copy and pasting)

Tbh most people my age doesn't know how to use Exel either. Hell, most people I know think its MS Paint but with numbers.

That being said, a lot of gen z people I know don't how to use the filing system on PCs which is a big deal. They also dont know how to use the filing system on their phones. There's going to be a whole generation of people that don't know how to find shit on their devices.

It's basically a DOS system, but without the logic.
The back button is F4 not Escape.

I think the OS is labeled as 2001, version 2.?.
The main screen looks like an Atari game.

It is completely inappropriate to the size and volume of our store.

Sounds like OS/2 Warp 4. You just are guessing the version wrong (it probably say 4.5).

But yep a lot of stores still use it.

When I was in school we had to learn home position typing first thing, then we had to learn how to navigate Microsoft Word and Excel, sometimes Powerpoint to a lesser extent. I wonder if schools today even teach that stuff.

Like if we were caught peeking at the keyboard when learning how to type the teacher would put this cardboard cover over our hands and keyboard to make us learn.

Gen X was there in time to still learn COBOL and FORTRAN, and saw videogames and the internet happen.
Still indifferent.

I've worked for some companies that moved from DOS based systems to other systems like Siebel or PEGA.

You'll miss the old school terminal went that happens. It's always quicker.

the last zoomer i mentored built an automation code that remotely called a separate program for which it built ten thousand input files, and ran that program ten thousand times so we could feed the results into a neural net

she seemed pretty ok at tech

somehow i got equal credit for laying out the algorithm for the code but she wrote it

So i have seen this topic all over the internet and as a millennial who has no idea how to use excel or desire to learn to use it (unless work requirement). That i have to agree its shocking and a bit worrying

That's funny. I worked for my county for a few years, as recently as 2018, as a public assistance case manager. The system the entire state of Minnesota uses to process pubic assistance/medical assistance cases was literally a DOS program. You open it up and it looks like the computer terminals in Fallout lol. It made extensive use of the function keys (F4 is the back button), and you navigate the system by entering 4-letter commands. It was developed 30 years ago and the state has never upgraded because it works so well and it is too costly to do so.

Its actually kind of mind boggling how oblivious Gen Z is with the internet / technology

Haha, we've seen some of the same boot screens....but more so with the IGT stuff.

And ya, as for your last point, I feel we are stuck. It's probably the weakest link in my company.
I don't like it because it's horrible and kind of a set up for anyone using it.

I'll try to remember to take a pic or two today.

It's definitely not a joke. The blame is primarily in developers hands, though.

Lol that's not the OS they are just using a MDA monochrome monitor. Which OS/2 supports ^_^

Trust me, that's not limited to Gen Z. I know millennials that don't know their way around a computer either. I'm so glad my high school taught us, or I could be one of those

Make sense to me. We grew up learning to work PCs. They grew up on phones/tablets.
Not really sure how much it'll matter though. I can work Excel advance functions and set up vpns but the IT guy who's like 15 years older still run circles around me lol
