Hasn't there been like 4 impeached presidents?

Seems a fairly low sample size to draw such a conclusion from.

Three. Andrew Johnson, Bill Clinton, and Donald Trump. Richard Nixon resigned before Congress could impeach him.

Even then it could be argued it didn't backfire, because the GOP loves misery and I'm not of the belief the amount of dead with sway any elections THAT much. Pretty much win/win for them.

They don't need to, they don't want to complain about anything real. The strategy is to retroactively delegitimize the past. This is a common republican strategy now-a-days. Completely own the airwaves with bullshit negative coverage about Biden to prove the the negative coverage of Trump was political, etc.
