Faraway Paladin and Shield Hero are pretty good

One thing I feel isekai should delve into is having the protagonist actually have to get used to the other world. Amphibia does it quite well, with Anne having to adjust to living in a world where everything is made with amphibians in mind (food included)

It's one of my least favorite genres (it's not really a genre but there's so many nowadays and I can't think of a better word) but it has a few shows I like every now and then. Tsukimichi was pretty entertaining as is Konosuba.

Log Horizon sort of does that. It's got the whole SAO sucked into a video game thing except they're in the actual game world and early plot points are stuff like "the food we spawn with the cooking menu tastes like sand."

Also, one other thing I like Amphibia doing is that Anne does care about the fact that she's stuck in another world and still misses her old life

InuYasha is still my favorite isekai >_>

I don't get why they all have to be a world where a character goes when they get hit by a bus and die? Why not just have the show start in the fantasy world without that dumb and disturbing set up >_>

self insert fantasy.
especially when the MC was pathetic and then getting cheat abilities.

my favourite isekai story has a pretty big starting arc that's just the protag trying to learn the language so he can actually interact with anyone in the world in a meaningful way

I think this is a point in general that should get more focus. if your fantasy world has a few basic premises that are very different from our world (the most obvious one is magic) there will clearly be a lot of significant differences in society that would catch the protag totally offguard but it's rare you ever really see this

Yeah, but that's the only one I can think of, all the other ones I've watched (not too many) just have them reborn as a baby with all their memories, not dying but just being transported, etc.

if you like it, you should read the novel or the manga. the anime is regarded as a bad adaptation by the fandom, they treated it as alternate continuity.

my fave is overlord tbh. not perfect and still has some gross edgy moments tho but i find it highly entertaining tho and is guilty pleasure of mine. i did follow up on the light novels and cant wait for the new season and the movie to come out. also for volume 15 and 16 to come out (volume 15 was split into two parts)

kinda tired of the isekais with harem elements. just remind me too much of VNs like rance and evenicle these days but toned down

Daichi was influenced to create this story based on the reports coming out of Rwanda during the Genocide, and boy does it show. The anime is considered by many fans to be a masterpiece, but be warned: it is intense enough that you will probably only be able to watch it once. This one belongs on the shelf right beside Grave of the Fireflies.

I second this recommendation. It's a short, terribly tragic story with a perhaps too-on-the-nose villain, but it is definitely a diamond in the rough.

Now I've been watching then reading Junji Ito and am now watching Recovery of an MMO Junkie

I don't like Isekai because they're mostly really lazy storytelling. The 'normal dude is in high fantasy' thing is a huge writing crutch because it lets the author avoid having to do intelligent worldbuilding or subtle cues to the audience because everything can be justifiably infodumped to the protagonist. It also lets the author skip on creating an interesting life history for the character and their place in the world because they have zero history with it. And they don't need any clever reason that the protagonist may be powerful because they're already alien to that world so when they break the 'rules' or have completely different power scaling, it's because they're alien.

And then with all that stuff that typically needs to be developed in a fantasy story discarded, isekais still typically fill its place with awful sex pandering and wish fulfillment stuff

I feel the same. But for the bolded part I think the problem is that most of the popular modern isekai's originated from light novels that are designed specifically for a certain demograph, which probably explains why these certain Isekai's always follow the same tropes and patterns. Because of this, it makes it hard for me to get into Isekai's, even though I know there is probably some out there I would probably enjoy that don't follow the same beats as other popular modern isekai's.
