The depth of their understanding is I get sad sometimes too. But then I cheer myself up.

I get sad sometimes.

Sometimes I'm not sad because I can't feel anything. Slap me, I need to know that I can feel.

Yeah, I don't really see the point of even talking about it, tbh. I'm not saying that people don't understand, because there are people that do, but like TC had said, it's not the every day person

TBH most people dont understand mental health in general. Everyone seems to assume its easy to just get over it and snap out of it.

Has your understanding of depression graduated beyond "I wouldn't have depression if I had a hot girlfriend" yet? If not, you have no room to say this.

For me, it's because it's different for everyone even if professional diagnosed so it's hard to understand. And it's hard to understand such a sensitive subject because a lot of people aren't willing to talk about it without having some hostility about it.

Its better to help these people understand that it has very little to do with what actually makes a person happier or not, but rather a chemical brain chemistry that doesn't allow happy feelings to come through.

People are weird with mental health.

When I told one person I had OCD, they said "Oh, I think everyone is a little OCD." So i just casually explained what OCD was (the entire point of the conversation was that I struggle with mental illness, so as to explain any odd behavior they see and not get worried or freaked out). Then they just sort of stick to "everyone has a little OCD" lol.

Then one person was like "have you tried switching to an all-natural diet?

Depressed = I wish I had a girlfriend. I wish I had more money. I wish I could take a vacation. My boyfriend just broke up with me. I got cheated on.

Depression = I could get a girlfriend, but it won't make me happy. I have money, but don't feel like leaving my house to do anything. Why take a vacation and spend that money when I'm just going to sit alone and do nothing the whole time? Of course they cheated on me, I'm no worth anyone's time

I can be walking down the street, just listening to music, and be crying because I can't turn off how many negative thoughts I feel about myself. It's ALL in my head

It kind of irks me when people say 'you could be in a worse situation' and 'be thankful for what you have' etc.

Which is true, yes.......but it's almost like they're shaming you and telling you you're not allowed to be depressed. And said 'advice' is the magic cure to turn your life around.

Yeah, well.. I dont particularly blame them either or chastise them when I dont get a response I dont like from em

Nor would I put myself in a position to be so incapable of perspective that I think we dont have any kind of intersection or commonality of what we are capable of feeling as people even if we live different lives

Depressed people get depressed for a reason and are capable of picking themselves out of it.

People with depression have depressed feelings sometimes for little or no reason and typically cannot pick themselves back out of it. That aspect of them simply doesn't work the same as a nuerotypical person.

Gatekeeping depression lol. Very compassionate stuff going on here

This doesn't help anyone. I wish I lived somewhere where it felt like the average person didn't have some form of depression >_>. But at oeast understanding others experience a lot of similar stuff I do makes it feel less alone. Depression doesn't have to be about mentally pushing everyone away. But that definitely makes it worse

Eh, I wouldn't call it, "Gatekeeping." It's very frustrating when you're in a very bad spot, looking for some help from family members, and all they offer is to just snap out of it, or that it's not all that bad, and other things like that. It makes it worse for me hearing how something that makes me want to [ToS] seems like no big deal to the people close to me.

Yeah that's what I'm seeing here too. If you have people in your circle who aren't understanding the kinda depression you have then just don't talk to them about it.

The issue is that people in their lives can help them, but not if they don't understand how sad you're feeling. But yeah, it's not their fault they don't understand. I get that

Ah. Everyone but my dad understands depression and the subtleties in my immediate family. So, I can't but also can see how family rejecting how you feel makes it alot more crushing. I can't act like Id know what it's like to have my main support through life taken away. This is why I believe as an adult, you make your own family and blood becomes no thicker than water. Again, I wouldn't understand all the subtleties of mentally breaking out a family with unsupportive views. But there's people out there that are more supportive that will take you in and might give you the mental support that your born family doesn't. I think we pick who is our family as adults.

I have a discord where some of us from here do that exact thing. We just vent to each other and see how we can relate to each other. If you're not already part of a group and are interested, let me know. I know I haven't always been the nicest person here, but part of it is just me getting absorbed into the energy of CE >_<. Arguments aren't a thing on the discord so far. Just self discovery, joking around and gaming discussion
