As a WV native, this happens constantly.

It gets rather patronizing honestly.

I am from WV is typically met with three reactions
  1. Sorry, I feel bad for you.
  2. Wow, and you've done so well for yourself, are you the first from your family to go to college/not work in a mine?
  3. Yeah my second cousin is from Blacksburg!
