I was raised pretty religious and when the first movie came out, I remember it being like...the biggest deal in the world. Was this just in the religious bubble I was in, or was this more widespread?

They were like sci-fi made for TV quality films that people would watch and laugh at and then put away. I don't think they had any sort of significant cultural impact.

I've never actually seen them but I've heard they are horrible. People watched them on vhs or DVD in church basements I think. They never were in theaters (except a modern single reboot attempt) or on tv

Believe it or not, I have read the books. During a brief attempt to revisit being a christian. I read the whole series out of curiosity. Even if you don't believe in that shit, the concept as a series of books, is interesting. But the writer sucks. It's a slog to get through

Also I remember the final battle is very anti climactic. My favorite most memorable moment is when the Anti Christ is young and he basically does the story from the Bible where Jesus is tempted by Satan in the desert. But in this case he accepts the temptation. It's a complete reverse of the Jesus event

Oh also, everytime they attempt the movies, they never get far enough to show the cool stuff. It always gets rebooted after like book 3. In the books you see demons and shit eventually but not that by book 3. The movies could be cool with Hollywood effects if they adapted that late part of the series

I can't imagine anyone caring about them except, like, super-Christian parents

My family is religious, but not to the extent that any of us ever gave a single shit about the books or the movies.

I was completely unaware that they keep getting rebooted. Then again if they're not in theaters that could explain why, lol.

Maybe not in your area, but I remember it was in a ton of theaters in the bible belt where I lived at the time. Churches would send whole groups to see it kind of like that jesus movie mel gibson made.

I do remember seeing the books in Wal-Mart back in the day but I only saw the original movies on Netflix. They were honestly quite forgettable.
