At the same time, I have giant hands, so Id always hold the controller the same way, and just position my thumb over either the d-pad or analog, whichever was required. I remember playing goldeneye on the n64 controller and thinking "wow this is fun" then I got into PC gaming and played Half Life + it's mods (Counter Strike, Team Fortress, the golden age of modding) and I instantly knew the 64 controller was trash compared to the mouse and keyboard. Later I played with console dual stick controllers and was able to make it work. But the silliness of that controller cannot be understated for certain genres.
