isn't pokemon not even the first game to use it? Anyway, locking down an entire genre to one series would be horrible. Why would anyone other than Nintendo corporate board members like that? Also they would have to have a massive fucking legal battle with the owners of Digimon. As well as Blizzard. World of Warcraft has a huge game mode that is basically Pokemon. ... Copied to Clipboard!

By the time Pokemon came along monster catching had been a thing in RPGs for a decade. People say Megami Tensei was first but it just made it popular, an earlier Japanese PC RPG featured monster catching.
