Study in the US? Are they incredibly wealthy in their country? Or is there some type of free scholarship program where their country pays for their tuition? I see so many international students in my university from mainland China (average person earns barely $300 USD), India, Vietnam and Philippines? Someone please educate me.

There are special programs designed specifically for international students, just as there are for Americans in other countries. Basically scholarships.

Yea. The hope is that we get them to stay here and use their smarts to do things for America.

Some kind of grant i suppose where they dont have to pay anything until theyre done.

Sort of on topic i dont get how people who dont speak english are able to get jobs. Dont get me wrong im not one of those "you gotta speak english in my country!!!!! Arrrrrrrgh!" People. What i mean is like people that i work with who speak really broken english who get put in menial jobs that everybody has a hard time understanding. I dont mean one of the popular languages like spanish or chinse but like a really obscure language like somewhere in africa or eastern europe. Like how did they manage to apply for the job and then when they got the phone call for the interview and then the interview itself. Just something i am curious about. They seem friendly enough. I was kind of friends with an iranian guy but i didnt have the courage to ask him.

This. I go to a music conservatory in NYC with 50% of our population being international from China, and most of them I know are paying the full $50k a year tuition

Nope. Some Masters, many or most PhDs, but definitely not all (and you shouldn't do a PhD if it's not funded but that's another story). My MA was not funded, but I won't do a PhD without funding.

because their ability to speak English doesnt always affect their ability to do a job. Some of them are able to do jobs with the bare minimum of English needed just to speak with superiors and what not. Math, Programming, engineering..they dont necessarily require any English.

Almost no terminal master's programs are funded because terminal master's programs mainly exist to rake in money for departments.

but how is that possible? I thought China was based on communism where everybody obtained a set amount of wages?

Very, very loosely based on.

Mostly the parts about disregarding human rights, more than anything else.

I worked for a university that recruited tons of international students.

Most of the students simply come from rich families. There are very few scholarships that pay for international student expenses. Their own countries don't tend to offer them and the US certainly doesn't. These students self-pay.

We tend to see the upper-level income families that bring their students over here. In every country, no matter how poor, you will have families that have more than others.

For example, we get a lot of students from Central and South America. My own family is from Central America and I know how poor those countries are. But certain cities have people with surplus that can afford the international education.

Another thing I've noticed is that international students are more likely to pay ahead 1, 2, or even 4 years of education. Their families have that much money that they can afford to do so. By doing so, they also get significant discounts as it's guaranteed money for the schools.

Just out of curiosity, what kind of jobs can allow you to obtain more than the average population? The average doctor probably earns barely above the median salary. Are countries like mainland china and areas in Central America, allow stock trading or some type of investing? Is that how the average person is able to obtain a surplus? It just blows my mind, please educate me more.

A lot of them own large export companies. In both of those regions, exports are big business. Anything from clothing, fruit, to minerals are very profitable.

Another is tourism. Depending on location many people own companies that make killings through tourism, like cruises, hotels, and believe it or not "voluntourism", which is a fancy word for companies that charge churches fees for going on mission trips to their countries.

When I was still in university my work study job was in Student Accounts where bills get paid and financial aid gets posted. A large portion of international students always came in and paid their bills in full with cash, and they paid WAY more than regular students because International rates are always way more for some reason.

Most of them came from African or Asian countries, and they all seemed EXTREMELY well off. It was just some random state university too, so I got the impression that the elite in those areas are kinda sending the lucky few with big wads of cash and no limit credit cards all over the country in similar, under the radar universities.
