I agree his comedy scenes are so off kilter, they're fun when they come around

I like that he used comedy to punctuate darkly absurd situations rather than making full on comedies. The image of US troops marching across scorched Vietnamese earth singing the Mickey Mouse Club song wouldn't be so shocking if the rest of the film was broadly comedic.

Strangelove is the exception, because the entire premise is darkly absurd.
