Are you required to use hard to understand vocabulary in a confusing syntax inorder to be a critic? Take this review for example: "It's a smart sketch that will convince no one and change nothing. That's the problem with contempt. If Baron Cohen's act, even its cleverest bits, feels sour, that's because it's just one shard in a kaleidoscope of modern gotchas."

Why would one shard in a kaleidoscope feel sour? I'm not understanding the comparison--perhaps somebody can break it down like a 5 year old for me.

It's funny, because in script writing, you're required to be simple and precise. None of that abstract edgy vocab pairing nobody outside a literature major will understand.

Out of all the shards in a modern kaleidoscope of gotchas, this is definitely one of them.

They are just saying that type of comedy/ political commentary is played out. "Modern gotchas" come in all varieties, and this does nothing to stand out or be interesting among them.
