Was reading news world today and came across this article:
https://www.newworldencyclopedia.org/entry/Constantinople,_Fall_of

"The Fall of Constantinople was the conquest of the Byzantine capital by the Ottoman Empire under the command of Sultan Mehmed II... This marked not only the final destruction of the Eastern Roman Empire, and the death of Constantine XI, the last Byzantine emperor, but also the strategic conquest crucial for Ottoman rule over the Eastern Mediterranean and Balkans."

Uh... why isn't anyone else reporting on this? Isn't this kind of a big deal? I went on NYT, WSJ, FOX, CNN - no one's running anything. Why don't they want people to know about this?

Great now there's gonna be copycats and false flags of this event. Stupid undergrads will defend it in their papers.

Istanbul was Constantinople
Now it's Istanbul, not Constantinople
Been a long time gone, Constantinople
Now it's Turkish delight on a moonlit night
Every gal in Constantinople
Lives in Istanbul, not Constantinople
So if you've a date in Constantinople
She'll be waiting in Istanbul
Even old New York was once New Amsterdam
Why they changed it I can't say
People just liked it better that way
So, take me back to Constantinople
No, you can't go back to Constantinople
Been a long time gone, Constantinople
Why did Constantinople get the works?
That's nobody's business but the Turks

Edit: this would have been funnier as a reply to SSJKirbys question. Especially the last line of this song.

The Byzantine empire was an empire in name only by that point. Their territory was barely more than the city itself.

Conatantinople had been ravages by the bubonic plague and its population was just a fraction of what it once was. Most likely, it was doomed to dissappear.

If the Ottomans hadn't invaded, Constantinople today would likely be nothing more than an archaeological site such as Babylon.

The fall of Constantinople is a very misunderstood historical event.

Dude....

1) Too soon. It's way too soon to even begin to comment on & try to politicize this crap
2) Take your victim blaming & aggressor-apologist attitude down to Assholeville, you'll find like company there

I disagree. The reason Byzantium was chosen to be the Eastern Roman Empire's capital was because it was strategically located. Someone would have moved in, if only for use of the Black Sea and a strait to the Mediterranean.

Constantinople was the Greek name for the city, and it remained the official name throughout the Ottoman era until World War I. After the Ottoman empire collapsed, Turkish nationalists wanted the city to be called by its turkish name, Istanbul, instead of its greek name.

One thing for sure is that the Byzantine empire as an entity was about to dissappear
That was a given once the Crusade hit them instead of walking all the way to Jerusalem. I'm just saying the city was too well located to abandon.

Eh, the crusaders hit them first in 1203 to install Alexios as emperor, they actually wanted them on their side for payment. It wasnt until Alexios was assassinated and they had trouble reaching egypt and jerusalem to begin with that they decided to have a total sack of the city for payment for their failed crusade, to which they were excommunicated for by Pope Innocent.

The Byzantine empire was still considered christian after all, and religion was politics back then.
