What happened?

The Democrats in the South starting getting bigly mad that the party was turning more liberal. This made it so that there were liberal and conservative Democrats. Conservative Democrats were mad about progress, and very mad about helping anyone that wasn't white. Since most of the party was dominated by liberal Democrats, the conservatives didn't have a voice.
Seething, they decided to start backing the only other party that was viable at the time, the Republicans.

And that's how the "switch" happened :V

It probably has to do with the media and movies only covering the 1960s KKK. Since that story has MLK and you get a bit of a happy ending with the March on Washington in those films.

You dont hear about the Reconstruction area that was going after Republicans. Or the one revived thanks to the film The Birth of a Nation in the 1910s-1920s. Kinda unfortunate there is a reason why Ulysses S. Grant is on the 50 but he hasn't had his Hamilton type movie/musical to remind people what he did to wreck the KKK during Reconstruction.

Fun fact: William H. Seward was the early front runner for the 1860 Republican nomination, but then it came out he had exchanged letters with John Brown (though he knew nothing of Browns plans) and it tarred him sufficiently that the Republicans went with Lincoln as their milquetoast moderate.

There's an active push to try and recharacterize Lincoln as a white supremacist.

He put his life on the line to end slavery, eventually dying for it, but we like to pretend that it was done to spite the South. Even though he could only end slavery after victory in the North was assured. Even though there would be no economic advantage to trying to spite the South which he worked diligently to try and rebuild. He said some racist things to get elected in racist communities. Let's hold him to account on that and pretend that's the real Lincoln; not the man who was martyred in the name of ending oppression.

What's really funny is that, if people wanted to demonize Lincoln, there is a legitimate outlet. He left Native American affairs to the man who (allegedly) said, "I've never seen a good Indian... alive." If people want to make a villain out of Lincoln, there's where they should be redirecting their assault. Anyone who picks up a history book can tell that ending slavery wasn't a strategy to win the Civil War.

Speech by Fredrick Douglass at an emancipation monument unveiling that's a very worthwhile read. He discusses the complex legacy Lincoln. Not so much trashing his legacy but a very frank testimonial that Lincoln definitely put the interest of white Americans and the preservation of the union as a far more important precedence than the abolition of slavery and the rights of blacks. And that Lincoln actually held some open contempt towards black abolitionist leaders and blamed them for the war.

It's not meant to demonize the man. He was a very important man at a very important point in american history. But he was still a man and still had flaws. History doesn't have to be viewed through a black and white lens. Lincoln can be both remembered as the important figure he was in the abolition of american slavery without having to be sanctified.
