Because he lost faith in D and D.

"Dan and Dave were tired, rightfully so," Haas said in Miller's book. "They were done, and wanted to move on, so they cut it short and then negotiations became, how many seasons can we stretch this out? Because of course HBO wanted more."

Haas added: "George loves Dan and Dave, but after season five, he did start to worry about the path they were going because George knows where the story goes. He started saying, 'You're not following my template.'"

well at least that confirms the last few seasons aren't close to what the books will have

of course the books won't actually have anything because they don't exist, but

HBO could have milked this thing for as much as they wanted and we would've slurped it up. It was a money printer.

But those two fuckwits decided to screw it so hard that they got fired from the thing that had them rushing to finish.

Embarrassing.

He also wanted more time to finish the books before the show ended. For some reason he thought that was possible until like the last 2 seasons.

It's pretty well-known that Dan and David are to blame. Obviously HBO would have loved to have more seasons of their biggest show. But Dan and David wanted to move on but didn't want to relinquish control to new showrunners.

Good to know he had issues with season five, always bothered me people acted like season eight was the only issue

It immediately started to dip in quality after they diverged from the books. But it wasn't an immediate nosedive. Just got worse and worse until the diarrhea that is season 7 and 8.

Season 8 alone needed at least one more season to develop out the story they were trying to tell in a meaningful way.

Game of thrones was green lit in 2013. Season 5 was in 2015. Season 8 was in 2019.

The last time Martin actually bothered releasing a book in his series was in 2011. He has nobody to blame but himself if he's unhappy with the direction the show went in.

Must have been an article talking about follow-up seasons being greenlit. My point is, Martin has been sitting on his ass doing nothing for a decade so if he's really upset over the fact that the show didn't follow his vision maybe he could consider that any other author would have finished their series by the time things started to diverge in the first place.

Except the show just didn't adapt the vast majority of the last two books. They didn't bother sticking to the source material they had.

Looking at the release dates, it is getting absurd we still don't have WOW yet.

Game of Thrones: August 1996
Clash of Kings: February 1999
Storm of Swords: November 2000
Feast for Crows: November 2005
Dance with Dragons: July 2011
Winds of Winter: ????
Dream of Spring: ????

It has been more than 10 years now since Dance, mother fucker better be releasing Winds and Dream of Spring in the same year, that's the only way you can justify this

The first 3-4 seasons were pretty faithful to the books. Around the end of season 4 there were some very serious and deliberate divergence choices in narrative

im not a fan of Martin after waiting almost ten years for WoW now but finishing his books has nothing to do with D&D not following the finished template.

I also wouldnt defend them considering they themselves made it clear they stopped giving a fuck after S4

By some miracle that it does, I believe it would be the last one he releases.

I don't even want the last 2 books at this point, the series has been thoroughly ruined for me by the way the show ended, as well as GRRM's obvious desire to never write another chapter again in his life. He can say whatever he wants, but it's clear and obvious that he intended to finish the story with the show so he could stop writing. He's just mad they didn't listen to him and fans still have a reason to want him to write.

3, 4, 5, 6 years betweens books and then over 10 years for book 6. At this point a best case scenario would be, what, 12 years? It's never happening lol. Even if it does, book 7 is DEFINITELY not happening. what would that one be, 20 years in the making?

The show deviated from the books in ways that made the story worse even before getting into covering stuff that George hadn't written yet.

I realised recently that the reason the terrible ending didn't bother me was that I had already checked out on the show when they cut tyrion's wife out. The scene with Tywin's death lost nearly all impact because the motivation was completely different.
