It would lead to the hiring of a lot of incompetent teachers just looking for a paycheck. To be worth that much pay, the standards for hiring would have to increase along with it. Which wouldn't be a bad thing, but wouldn't likely solve the shortage either.

I think we should find some kind of middle ground between them making $20K a year and paying for supplies out of pocket, and making six figures. Why not $35K? $40K?

Increased them to what? They already require a college degree(usually in Education) and many states require teachers to get a Masters(typically while on the job) to keep their jobs. You think every teacher ought to be a PhD?

Maybe qualifications is the wrong word. Basically I feel a lot of teachers are unqualified to teach children, so maybe the better term would be qualifications standards.

why would a teacher pay for supplies out of pocket? I would not if i was a teacher, some students nay do without something but the bad press would force schools to buy whats needed

Americans don't care about teachers making a fair wage or education, that's nerd shit.

We need to make sure our sandwich makers and register jockeys are taken care of and make $40k a year first.

Okay, so you'd be the teacher using dry erase markers that don't work, not having staples or tape, or other supplies that you need to actually perform the job. And the school would tell you "deal with it, our budget is tight."

I'd argue there are a lot of other institutional problems beyond just pay, but I'm sure it'd help.

3pies' post is wrong, but so is this one. The degree is typically in their intended subject (or liberal studies or education if they're doing lower-grades), and I'm not aware of anyone being required to get an MA, and I live in CA which has some of the strictest requirements for teachers.

Yes, this is definitely why teachers aren't getting paid enough

Categorically false. Ive been teaching almost 20 years, no educator in the country is forced to get a masters, at least not in the US. A masters is required to be a post-secondary professor, not K-12.

My wife is a teacher

You guys have it backwards, the reason there are incompetent teachers is because anyone competent leaves for a job that pays more than $40k a year for 60 hours a week+mandatory overtime

More pay would attract good candidates who care and stay in the profession

I make the median in my state, which is enough to live within my means but not really enough to save a lot each month.

I work between 45-55 hours per week, including advising/coaching/odd jobs within the district.

The only areas where there are teacher shortages are basically in areas with horrible school funding. Drastically raising teacher salaries would exacerbate that.

No.

Youd need to provide support and acknowledgement of what role and services teachers are providing for the entire world

The medics of the world are SLAMMED making money and are still unhappy with the stress

imagine being blamed after hours for being the reason your kid isnt learning by doctors

what qualifications should be increased

2 Master Degrees
20 years of work experience as a full time instructor
4.1 GPA minimum
>750 credit score

Clearly only these people are qualified to make just over minimum wage /s
