..and more the feeling of adventure it gives you? Maybe its semantics but most jrpgs dont have what I'd call great stories but those stories create an engaging sense of adventure.

Nah. Some of the dullest JRPGs I've ever played have had a fantastic sense of adventure.
Nostalgia on the DS is a great example. You have a massive world to explore in an Indiana Jones-esque steampunk globetrotting adventure with airships and ancient cities. But the story is so dull that it completely undermines the adventure. --- ... Copied to Clipboard!

What are some RPG stories you thought were great? If you mean rpg stories in general then Planescape Torment. In terms of JRPGS personally I'd go with Mother 3, Suikoden ii, and Panzer Dragoon Saga though my memory is a bit hazy and I need to replay Suikoden ii and PDS. --- All politicians are scum. One of my favorite JRPG's of all time, Grandia, had a fantastic sense of adventure. It starts off just about the main character wanting to be an adventurer and explore the world.

what are some examples, IYO? FF8 is the probably the best example imo of a horrible story but a fun sense of adventure. That's going off memory I'd probably be bored out of my mind now. Earthbound has an unparalleled sense of adventure imo. ChronoTrigger has fun characters but I dont think the story itself is what was great, but the adventure was great. --- All politicians are scum. I dunno about you guys but for me the gameplay, battle system, the grind and the progressive growth of getting stronger has always been the key for me in JRPGs. Which is why I'm always super stronger than the boss lmao.

FF8 has really cool places and individual mission sequences, but when you step back and look at the whole narrative... it's not a particularly satisfying plot. It suffers from the all too common bootstrapping paradox that pisses me off in all fiction that messes with time. Thus why I thought it was a great example lol. --- All politicians are scum. The story should be tied into the adventure. The formula gets stale real fast, and if the map is predictable, I'll fall asleep.

I agree that the sense of adventure is a draw factor for a lot of JRPGs. I'd also say that the larger variety of bright and creative settings is another major factor.
Good cover art is another thing that drew me in (e.g. FFVII's cover and Xenogears's cover) --- "Evil is what you make of it. Bind it to a higher purpose, and you will have altered its nature." - Gerald Tarrant ... Copied to Clipboard!
