Should honestly be severe consequences for any company/boss sending anything in regards to a union vote as just blatant coercion even if they've tried to make it appear "friendly" and "on the workers side"

Its very weird to me that people in charge think that this is the nice and civil response to unions. When its just so transparent they are legit afraid of having to do anything more than the bare minimum to help their employees.

Just saw that mentioned in John Oliver's top story on union busting. Fucking deplorable because time will only tell if they'll call Starbucks' bluff, but get fired anyway even if they do successfully win a vote :(

Starbucks is weird
They actually treat their employees pretty well. I dont see unions being able to successfully fight for much more than what Starbucks already gives. At best they'll probably just retain the current type of environment. Starbucks was going to do that anyway.

The union doesn't really hurt them, so why fight it? With that, im not sure if union dues are currently worth whatever they can gain. I can see an employee easily voting either way.

I've worked for Sbux for 7 years, they've had this coming for a long time.

Starbucks does a fantastic job at bean counting. They have a great benefits package including free college, deals on healthcare (but don't pay enough to really cover it), paid sick time and vacation, free food and drinks when you work, and more. If it wasn't for the benefits I would've quit long ago (trying to get through school, very slowly). When the pandemic hit, they shut down tons of stores and gave "partners" (the workers) the choice (bad memory here) to quit with several months of payout, be on-call and get your base pay if you don't work or +$3/hr if you do, or get unemployment.

But the partners working got SCREWED and that screw job has continued ever since stores have reopened. A big issue at Starbucks has always been "what the rules say" versus "what your manager/district manager expects," and that's only gotten worse during COVID. Corporate policy is still no mask = no order inside. But, if you try to uphold that policy and the customer complains it can get you fired. And unfortunately that was true 12 months ago when COVID was running rampant and vaccines weren't readily available. There's also a massive supply chain issue impacting the stock of many products. When stores first started to notice that issue, the CEO literally said, "There is no supply issue, everything is normal." There's just a massive disconnect between what happens in stores and what corporate imagines and that disconnect becomes a problem when "da rules" tell baristas to make conflicting decisions.
And then there's the fact that any barista could go to Target or many other companies and get $15/hr+. Seasoned baristas are leaving in droves and the only people coming in to replace them are high schoolers getting their first jobs - but without any of the tools or training to make them competent.

If a union basically holds corporate to their own rules, it'd be worth it. There's other issues like the destruction of the "third place" and increased importance on basically fast food services and really poorly run metrics, but that's pretty run-of-the-mill.

I stand corrected. Apparently over the past year or so, they've really tanked. Probably very worth unionization imo then

You cant tell us that were essential workers and then also tell us that we shouldnt have a voice or equal say, said Jaz Brisack, an activist barista who before getting hired last year at Starbucks was employed by Workers United as an organizer on a successful unionization campaign at another Buffalo-area coffee chain, Spot Coffee.

I remember that started before Covid.

I once put an application in there but didn't follow up on it.
At the time, before all of this, it looked shoddily run.

Lol, I had an ex who worked for Starbucks. Busted her ass for them, started out loving the job, eventually left disgusted due to their shitty treatment of employees.

Fuck Starbucks. Just another corporation way too big to have to give a fuck about the groundpounders who make it happen for them day in and day out with scalded hands, aching bodies, and frazzled nerves from listening to entitled dipshit karens honking at them all day.
