Google, Amazon Prime make you pay to watch certain movies, either for renting or buying. And this is despite having subscriptions for them. --- Less is more. VHS tapes used to be prohibitively expensive, like $80. That's why video rental stores became popular.

IIRC they also had redonk agreements with the game and movie companies, where they dont even make that much money off of a rental.

Rentals were honestly a fine idea, especially for movies. I don't really actively seek out watching a movie all that often, and it is/was a fine way of just watching a movie a single time without a bigger commitment.
Games, a bit less so, but it wasn't that bad of a model for shorter games or to grab something to play in multiplayer with a friend or something. Sure, a lot of games were too long to be a great idea to rent, but there were some games that worked well for it. --- Winner of the Third Hacked User Contest. World's #1 Phoenix Wright fan. ...
