yea, when I first saw it on cable years ago, I thought something had went wrong, but then I found out that was how it was supposed to end.

Yeah, the ending was...a whole thing.

It was one of the most talked about and parodied things on talk/entertainment shows for like a week

I was very disappointed at the ending at first. However when you realize it cuts to black because Tony got capped from behind, the ending gets a lot better.

Its the black screen of death from Tony's perspective. It was also heavily foreshadowed throughout the scene, episode, and last season that Tony was going to die.

honestly, my beef with it is just that the presentation and execution of it wasn't the greatest

i think if it had been the right timing, the right delivery, it would've been on the opposite site. but that's the alternate dimension we didn't get to live in. instead they didn't spend enough time on making it iconic enough and what's left is this kinda really awkward one that has a good idea but not a good execution but now we can't "do it better" without it just being some kind of homage or parody.

And I thought it did it perfectly and made it very obvious what happened.

"You probably don't even hear it when it happens, right?"

^That and the scene of Silvio and Gerry Torciano where Sil doesn't even realize what's going on at first show and tell you what happened.

The execution was perfectly fine. What happens is exactly what Bobby told Tony would happen and what Tony did a flashback to the prior episode. The Members Jacket is a callback to Tony and Chris having Eugene execute someone in a diner the way he's about to be capped. The dude who kills him re-enacts Tony's favorite Godfather scene. Tony is shot from 3 o'clock which is the warning Mikey Palmice gave to Chris to pass to Tony when Chris saw Mikey in hell during his coma. Tony being whacked in front of his family mirrors him whacking Phil in front of his family. The last thing Tony sees is Meadow, arguably the only person Tony loved unconditionally. It's basically Phil's death but from Tony's own POV.

There's nothing lackluster about it.

If you want to go even deeper into pure fanon, there's arguments about Meadow being Tony's guardian angel arriving too late for the first time, and about the weird edit of Tony walking into the diner and seeing himself already seated as a callback to Chris telling Tony that in hell, you just see yourself dying over and over again, meaning Tony is already dead and we're watching him relive it.
