Made the mistake of playing of playing TTYD and Super Paper Mario first (years ago), since TTYD is more polished overall. Still, 64 holds up well.

It's been a while since I've played a RPG. Recently I've playing FF IX as well. Thinking about playing Fire Emblem (2003) after I beat one of them.

I still enjoy super paper mario.

They clearanced it out for like $8 at my target when it was relatively new and my store went ape shit. We had a lot too.

I have stronger opinions about the chapters in TTYD. I don't feel too strongly about the chapters in PM1. They are just more consistent.

I think I like PM1 more just because replaying thousand year door makes all the backtracking really obvious and tedious

yeah the level design in TTYD is really lacking. tons of hallways with only 2 exit points, made worse by having backtrack across them

the first paper mario even does that better. there are multiple times where you can skip a backtracking section if you know what you need to do

I hated moving those little creatures around in chapter 2. Doesn't help that the background music that plays in that area is the most repetitive in the game.

That and the combat (action command specifically) is REALLY clunky and un-refined in PM64. Like, Do a bunch of power bounces on TTYD then do the same on 64. You'll know exactly what I mean.

Other than that while both games are great, I do think 64 has a more classic feel and all in all a better presentation for the gameplay.

Biggest Problem is the tedious chapters of TTYD..Chapter 2 had too much back tracking and becomes tedious. Chapter 4 is even worse, depressing and back-and forth through a small area; Chapter 6 the train is cool but it goes on too long and again, way too much tedious running around. Chapter 7 looking for white is ridiculous and too much backtracking everywhere once again.

Those are dead-spots for gameplay IMHO. First game didn't have that problem, every chapter is full of action. TTYD only has Chap 1,3,5, and 8 that are solid and fun to play more than once.

even chapter 5 has plenty of backtracking with the Keelhaul Key stuff

TTYD really did have much worse chapter/area designs. They tried to restrict exits to the left or right side way too much which made a lot of places just a hallway that you repeatedly go through.
