I'm in my 30s and it just doesn't do it for me anymore. Replaying Witcher 3 was a bore, Pikmin is on the right track but it's not giving me a reason to continue. BotW was enjoyable but not magical.

But maybe our taste just changes? I played Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask for the first time last year and they were EPIC. Where are games like that these days?

In my 30s as well and currently in sort of a gaming renaissance that began with BOTW back in 2017. Was definitely magical for me.
Interest has always kind of peaked and dipped in phases since adulthood, for me. Never know when it could change.

I did, but Sekiro brought me back. Turns out I just need more action in my games now. Story heavy games don't really work for me anymore.

But there are often times when games currently coming out don't really appeal to me. Like right now is early into a console gen so it's not really delivering much for me atm

Kind of. I still play a lot but getting a new game was a HUGE deal years ago, now its like 'well lets give this a try.' Nowhere near as exciting.

Im more into reading and board games now. Sign of the times i guess.

I game less these days, but I think the biggest obstacle is the price of new consoles and $50 - $60 per game. I COULD spend that money on video games, but I could also spend it on other things that have more value.

Yes, but not because of gaming itself. More because of the companies and how they have mostly forgone passion and actual cool ideas in favor of mass appeal to the lowest common denominator. See; The Phantasy Star series as a prime example.

And companies that DO have cool ideas do a bunch of shady shit...See Bungie at present.

I have zero patience anymore for dumb gamer plots, a million sequels, or copycat design. When I was a kid I'd give things a try a lot more but they've been making the same shit for 20 years at this point

I tend to stick to older games. Stuff like Ocarina of Time, Digimon World, Pokemon gen1 - gen3, Harvest Moon, Final Fantasy 7 - 9, Diablo, Animal Crossing. Those games are still more interesting to me. Two newer-ish games I enjoyed were Fire Emblem: Three Houses and the Spider-Man games. I have a PS5 and a Switch but mostly use it to play updated retro games. A new hobby (kinda) of mine is figuring out how the developers did certain things within the game.

I've always been a sporadic gamer, so I don't know if it's an age thing, but I do tend to go on less gaming binges that last shorter than those of my youth. That could simply be a function of having a lot of other interests/hobbies, though.

you're playing the wrong games. that was my problem.

everyone kept talking about games that i don't want to play. when i stopped playing them and found other games that fit what i liked, i started enjoying games again.

Pretty much. I am a JRPG fan and the developers have seemingly decided that the consumers dont like those games anymore, despite the fact that they often sell faster than the developers can make them (see Octopath Traveler).

They want short, online-focused games based on graphics and catered to streamers. Games and systems are harder to get and more expensive and everything is these souls type games now.

Yeah, I know they still make JRPGs, but not like they did in the PS1/PS2 generations. Theyre way shorter now and I dont feel like they put as much into them.

I thought I was, cause I was playing a lot of the big open world games, and just getting bored of the tedium and filler. I've been forcing myself to play more linear, shorter games, and I'm loving gaming again. Maybe you're just playing too much of one genre that you're learning you don't particularly care for.

Pretty much, as I've mostly been replaying old games over and over again.

These last few months however I'm completely hooked on Subnautica, in a way I haven't been on any game for many years.
Whenever I'm home, I want to play it. Whenever I'm not home or otherwise unable to play it, I'm often thinking about playing it, and coming up with strategies on how and why to play a certain way.

Recently a friend of mine got it as well, in part because I recommended it to him (he's a nostalgic gamer who loved Sub Culture as a kid). I really have to contain myself from spoiling things to him, and try to stick to vague hints when he's stuck, but I'm already very glad to have someone irl with whom I can talk about it (especially since the Subnautica boards on here are pretty dead).

I just can't get enough of it and I hope Unknown Worlds makes more of it.
