I never did that. But I use to be the guy that would make mixtapes for everyone else. I was pretty good at finding the type of hip hop or R&B they'd like out of my collection. Then streaming and algorithms came along and tuk mah jerb

It used to be considered romantic because it's a personal gift that takes time and effort to make, but nowadays it takes so much effort compared to other methods of doing the same that it wouldn't really make sense anymore, especially since it's unlikely both parties have a cassette player.
