I feel like Mario has lost popularity in recent times while the House of Mouse is just getting bigger and bigger.

They're in the middle of making a major Hollywood Mario movie, so I'm curious what makes you think the mascot has lost popularity.

Since when has Mario been more recognizable?

Mouse has been around for almost a century and has been featured in a variety of mediums whereas Mario is barely half that age and basically non existent outside of games.

There's probably not even a single person that doesn't know Mario!

Are there even any new Mickey Mouse cartoons or films being made? Seems like Mickey essentially just exists as a mascot now, while Mario still features heavily in games.

As a father of two I can safely say they're constantly pumping out new Mickey content

Pretty sure that movie is targeted towards the millennials. I'm referring to kids born in 2010 or later.

Nearly every kid has at least once played Mario Kart or Smash, at the very least. If they haven't played Mario Party or Odyssey.

I remember hearing that Mario surpassed Mickey as most recognizable about 20 years ago

Mickey Mouse has definitely grown in popularity. Infants and Toddlers these days are watching Mickey more than they are Sesame Street and all that stuff. So in a few years we'll have the NEW Mickey Generation.

There are two shows currently: one for preschoolers and another which has something of a Ren & Stimpy vibe.

You say he has lost popularity yet

-Super Mario Party is the best selling Mario Party by ~50% over the previous best seller
-Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the best selling Mario Kart
-Super Mario Odyssey is the best selling 3D Mario by nearly 2 times.
-A collection of 3 upscaled Mario ROMS with barely any bonus features sold 9 million copies for 60$ in ~6months.

He also has a movie coming out, recently got a theme park and several Lego sets.

Mario has absolutely gained popularity compared to 5-10 years ago.

On the whole, I think Disney is intentionally downplaying Mickey Mouse.

They're supposed to lose him to the public domain sometime in the next decade or so. Disney will probably get the law changed -- but I think they're demoting Mickey just in case they wind up losing exclusivity.

Mickey won't be any good to Disney if and when his dead corpse can legally appear in a GTA game.
