They are hardcore, old school dungeon crawlers. So just be prepared for that. I'm talking having to grind the first enemy on the first floor of the first dungeon for an hour to level up your party because you won't make it to the next save point otherwise. Or things like you have total freedom over your party composition which means you can totally build a team is impossible to actually beat the game with. Or you stumble upon a floor boss wandering around after 40 minutes of exploring and it just unceremoniously one shots you.
The older games, or at least the first one, also made you draw and maintain your own map. --- "History Is Much Like An Endless Waltz. The Three Beats Of War, Peace And Revolution Continue On Forever." - Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz ... Copied to Clipboard!

I think they're one of the best JRPGs out there when it comes to gameplay. It's very challenging though. I heard IV is the easiest and most accessible to newcomers.

Yea, if you like turn-based combat it has some of the best teambuilding and combat around.
I recommend IV or Untold 2 specifically to new players. Either is a good starting point, If you want mechanical freedom and complexity go with IV. If you want an easier introduction and prefer story with characters, start with Untold 2's story mode. --- move all remaining groundhog mercenaries to the front lines. The Untold games have a story mode that fuctions as babies first dungeon crawler to ease you into the genre. There are also the Persona Q games for that. Good series in my opinion. Shin Megami Tensei Strange Journey is also a good choice.

none of the 3DS entries require grinding, EO is one of, if not the best balanced classic dungeon crawls available. Bad balancing (and some straight up programming errors) was true for the original DS releases of I and II, but the series has taken big steps in the right direction since then in terms of balancing.
I recommend normal mode for new players that still like a lot of puzzly combat and meaningful team structure, easy for those who don't, and expert/advanced for those experienced with turn-based combat who really want to squeeze every bit of strategy out of the game. --- move all remaining groundhog mercenaries to the front lines. Also, the demos for IV and Untold 2 should be available on the eshop still, and generally take you through the first 5-10 hours of the game to get a feeling for them.

Thanks guys, I think I will try 4. I have some experience playing older SNES dungeon crawlers like wizardry and Eye of beholder, but I wasn't very good at that them lol

Nice, should be comparable to a higher QoL Wizardry with a bigger focus on combat encounters. Post again if you'd like some teambuilding thoughts.

I would also recommend Strange Journey --- I do not receive notifications, so using the @ feature will not do anything. I might see your post and respond though if I have already been in the topic. ... Copied to Clipboard!

IF you're willing to get through the learning curve they're probably the best dungeon crawler games out there.
