Which means I should play Zero Mission, Super, Fusion, and Samus Returns first?

I haven't played any of the Metroid games before, just watched a quick youtube video on the metroid story so far and then jumped straight into Dread. I am having a blast with it right now

Honestly all 4 of those games are good too and I dont think theyd be hard to go back to after playing Dread.

I wouldn't go that far (well, it's not a million miles away).

Samus certainly controls better than ever, and I enjoyed the bosses more than most previous 2D Metroid bosses (although that style of boss isn't for everyone).

That said, I think the level design was better in Super and Zero Mission (but it's still decent in this one), although the sequence breaks in Dread are a pleasant surprise. There are quite a few one-way paths (some that remain for good) and places where you're locked in, more so than in Super and Zero Mission at the least. Plus, the path forward is generally placed very conveniently (e.g. teleporters that take you where you need to go), so if you like figuring out where to go, it may not feel quite as satisfying.

To be fair though, the others are quite linear without sequence breaks, even Super.

A few things are a matter of taste, like the melee counter (especially against bosses, where it's occasionally required), the music (most people prefer that in previous games), EMMIs (there isn't a huge amount of variety with them), Adam, the (over?)use of 2-way teleporters/trams, the fiddling with buttons/levers to change the environment, etc. These things will no doubt greatly offend the purists.

Don't get me wrong though, it's a great Metroid game, and near the top of my 2D Metroid ranking.

I wouldn't worry too much about playing the others first, except possibly Super (and 1/2 if you want to play them). Some find the controls in that one hard to adjust to (with the run button, switching between weapons with Select, etc.), others would say "git gud".

Probably in terms of the 2D ones. I went back and replayed the older ones recently and they feel extremely archaic. Things like how maps are presented in game is abysmal. Pre-mercury steam games handle atmosphere a bit better for the most part, but I think everything else is better in Samus Returns and Dread.

move all remaining groundhog mercenaries to the front lines. Have sheep troopers squadrons A and B flank the cows. They're using DC-17 hoof blasters.
