like, you can have real world actors be older/younger than each other, but not have it be reflected when it comes to the characters.

for example, in Golden Girls, the actress who played the mom was actually younger than the actress who played her daughter.

sometimes people use it to speak down on others (if both people are around each other's age), but sometimes it could be because of the dynamic between the two - sometimes a person can be seen as being a guide/leader/mentor, even if they're around the same age as someone (or even younger).
