No, every other game you had to actively overlevel your pokemon on purpose.
The newer games just catching pokemon and nothing more gives you a shit ton of exp, so you're stuck with the choice of: catch pokemon(the entire reason the game exists) and be overleveled or blaze through the game to make it "more challenging"

pretty sure i solo'd blue with a Blastoise while the XP share all had everyone else at the same level

Apparently in the post game the gym leaders have actual competitive teams with full EVs and all that good stuff

Congrats!

So I just learned how shiny breeding works in Gen 2. I'm actually kind of curious to attempt this. If one parent in Gen 2 is shiny, an offspring of the opposite gender has a 1/64 chance to be shiny. But, because of Gen 2 breeding mechanics, collecting and hatching eggs takes FOREVER. But, that's still some very good odds.

But something you can do to make this better, is the red Gyarados can be sent back to a Gen 1 game with the time machine. You then use the Mimic TM on it, then encounter a Ditto. Use Mimic to learn Transform. Then the Ditto will Transform. Wait for it to Transform again, and voila, due to a bug, you now have a Ditto that will be shiny when traded back up to Gen 2. And because it will be a different OT than any Pokemon you obtain in a Gen 2 game, you have much higher chances of getting an egg each cycle.

Yeah its defiantly not that close, even with increased distance they've done in the past we wouldnt be able to trade.
