Squid Games is a knock off of the original Battle Royale. If you're a noobie, then I'm going to assume you're in diapers or below 21 years of age and haven't had much exposure to the awesomeness of foreign films.

SQUID GAMES SUCKS. SUPER OVERRATED SHOW. I have no effin idea why it's so popular, it angers me that BR didn't get this much recognition initially.

How is it a knock off? The premises aren't even the same. Battle Royale, students are to kill one another until one survives. Squid Games the contestants are people who owe alot of money and have to play children games where if you lose, you get killed.

Squid Game isn't a battle royale though, just a death game. The Running Man predates Battle Royale by a long time and there are probably plenty of other older ones.

It's more a bad Kaiji knock off.

Nothing in Squid Game can even compare to the overly dramatic Restricted Rock/Paper/Scissors arc

Hunger Games was literally the shit. It was horrible so I don't even put in on the scale. All the weapons used in that movie were unoriginal and just plain ol' boring. Compare that with the specificity of BR's weapon choice--everybody had their own unique weapon--which made the show much more enjoyable.

I know this topic is a troll, but anyway.

Battle Royale is far simpler of a story and while it still has similar themes, they go so much deeper into those themes in Squid Game.

Battle Royale was about the spectacle far more than Squid Game was, and it focused more on the audacity of children being forced to kill each other rather than citizens feeling pressured to join the games because of their obligations to society.

Also, whereas Squid Game (haven't finished it don't spoil me) is ostensibly in present-day real world Korea, Battle Royale's manga takes place in a near future after a severe economic collapse and rise in juvenile crime, with people being all for this shit as a public spectacle. Alternatively, if you're talking about the novel, it took place in a history when Japan won WW2.

It is but it isn't.
Its mostly because at the end of the show the guy is coming after the Squid Game makers like in Battle Royal where the kid wants to go after the BR Makers.

Both are great btw

Theres actually a Chinese live action version of Kaiji called Animal World where the main character is a pretty boy. Theres also a thing thrown in where he imagines himself as a clown stylistically killing people but otherwise its literally just the Janken game with most of the same twists.

The clown stuff may have been thrown in just for the trailer, as its barely a thing in the movie, doesnt really affect anything but the trailer doesnt include anything but it:

First of all, Battle Royale isn't original either. It's inspired by a couple of Stephen King short stories

The Long Walk

And

The Running Man

Also, if you are talking about the movie, lol

The movie is the worst version of Battle Royale. I read the novel and the manga first. Then saw the movie and hated it

Yeah but both play on themes that bring an overall tone of hopelessness and cynicism to the world. In Battle Royale you have kids killing each other in this dystopic futuristic world, where as in Squid Game, you're also getting killed but in a more modern dystopic setting. They're both in the same genre of WTF-DID-THAT-JUST-HAPPEN, except one is much older (BR) and the other seems like it gathered up all the good parts from its predecessors and mashed everything into one money making machine.

It's not an original concept but it's a fun one that tends to be popular whenever it is done well.

Battle Royale isn't anything different in that regard.

Also did anyone notice the part where the masked man was getting a facial recognition scan? What was the point of that scene, considering he was wearing a mask the whole time? There's a security flaw considering anyone can wear the same mask to enter that room. It didn't make sense to me at all. Maybe someone can better clarify this?

I think it's so they know what number they are. I haven't finished the show yet though.

Many people always ask me how I was able to get into Harvard as a 16 year old who skipped 3 grades of high school. They think I got in because of my scholarly records, but no the key is the interview. As I sat in the Harvard Dean's office in front of the board of reviewers for my application, the Dean asks me "Why should you be a good candidate for this school?" They seemed bored but I replied "Well I was born a child prodigy, placed 1st in my state spelling bee for three consecutive years, I can speak eight different languages not counting Latin, play four different instruments, I skipped grades 4 through 6, and graduated my high school as valedictorian at the age of 14. I then worked as an intern at both Telsa, and NASA." Suddenly the room burst into laughter and many of board instantly started scribbling down "No" near the application check marks. The Dean says "Sorry but you are just not the type we are looking for." But then I said "Excuse me but I wasn't finished... I watch Rick and Morty" The Dean looked at me like an idiot and said "So....?" Then I replied with a smile "And I understand all the references and subtle jokes" An audible gasp let out by the board was so loud the secretary had to come in. You could hear a pin drop and then suddenly all at once the entire board clicked their pens on the "Approved Box" and I was instantly handed a diploma and now I'm teaching advanced physicals there. I guess you can say I'm pretty smart. :)

I tried watching Battle Royale and yeah the acting is way too hammy. Hammy acting is usually fine if it's in a "so bad it's good" type of movie or if it's self aware it is hammy. The problem is that it wasn't neither. I tried reading the manga as well but didn't really enjoy it. With that said, I heard that the novel is better with its world building and everything.

Squid games I enjoyed because it's one of the few shows where I ended actually caring about all the main characters. I think the acting was done exceptionally well and the kicker was when the contestants were given a chance to back out of the games. In shows like this, it would've been very easy to have the contestants stay without a chance to exit the game but it really goes to show just how desperate these people are willing to do to get that money. Plus the symbolism and message is way more impactful. Obviously it isn't the best show ever, but it is pretty damn good for what it was trying to do.

Squid Game is not art. It's just a big juicy burger that appeals to the palettes of most people because it's commonly known, cheap and filling. When I think of amazing artists, I think of outliers that challenge the status quo and aren't afraid to dish out some kind of crazy concoction, like the food you see in the anime Food Wars.

Kaiji is supreme
It's been such a long time I've seen Kaiji (13 years ago maybe?). I'm actually stoked to find out there's a season 2.

Have you seen 3%? Reading a brief summary: This is a Brazilian dystopian sci-fi series that consists of a total of 4 seasons. Its first season aired in 2016. This show depicts a story of a girl who lives in a future world that divides into two-half. A world divided into progress and devastation. One half has a percentage of 97 out of 100. They are miserably living their lives but on the other hand, the left 3% percent population is having a luxurious life. Each year 20 years old teenagers out of 97% of the audience have to compete with others in a series of events for making their wish fulfil of making a space in the 3% percent stated rich people.

I'm glad to see more eastern asian films getting recognition.
