Thats normal. Youre supposed to give them time to make adjustments due to you not being available to work.

I'm not setting my alarm 4 hours before work just to see if I'll be sick or not. Then I'll wanna go back to sleep and everything will be messed up.

They'll just have to deal with it if I wake up and can't make it. It doesn't really happen so not worried about it.

They should be prepared for any random employee not showing up. If they cant do that, management is setting themselves up for failure.

I work in the tool room in a factory ordering stuff and handing out parts. It needs to have 24 hour coverage or things go down. I can see why they'd want the notice to contact the next shift member to come in early. Sometimes it's just not going to happen.

It's not a bad job but the staffing situation sucks since it's only 3 of us total. One person per shift with zero backup since they keep it so locked down like people want to steal that shit they can't even use or sell.
Like something like this is absolutely terrible. The management is guaranteeing that there will be shut downs.

If management doesn't have a backup plan for sudden things like this, they suck ass at management (specifically risk assessment and mitigation) and shouldn't be in a management role.

I called early in the morning when my appointment was late Monday afternoon. Shouldn't be too hard to find someone willing to take the empty slot.

It's anywhere from 48 to 96 hours depending on the exact timing of the call and the appointment. It's plenty of notice.
Real-time hours isnt the problem. If you called Tuesday about a Friday appointment it probably wouldve been fine. Friday to Monday is one business day. Most places stipulate X business days in advance for cancellation. Its a policy you agree to when booking the appointment. Requiring more than one business day heads up is more than reasonable.

Well we do get by. If someone calls out and I'm asleep, the supervisor will cover until I come in.

And I take something to help me sleep so that's pretty much always the case.

Our bosses would like us to give at least 2 hours notice if we are sick and can't make it. Which doesn't really matter since we are shorthanded and there's noone to call in to cover anyway. Plus any time you are sick at my work, doesn't matter what the symptoms are, you have to provide a negative Covid test before you come back.

I only hear about this in retail. Most office jobs I've had and have heard about don't have these silly requirements.

Then again, I work in IT so if I'm sick, I can just work from home.
