60k is 40k after taxes. that's 3,333/month...
That's just taxes. Now add...
  • health insurance,
  • dental insurance,
  • life insurance,
  • disability insurance,
  • 401k,
  • union dues (if applicable), and
  • child support (If applicable).
Now you're looking at about $500 to $1000 less per month, bringing your net pay to just under 30K. With that, you'll need to pay monthly...
  • Mortgage/rent,
  • Food shopping,
  • Car note,
  • car insurance,
  • cell phone,
  • electric,
  • water (if applicable),
  • gas, and
  • internet bills.
Finally, whatever you have left over can be split between savings, grooming and other recreation (dinner, movies, amusement parks, etc).

So depending what state you're in, 60k means you are damn near poor, especially if you're single.

I make just over that now and I'm ok.

Although I'll need to make over 90k a year to own a house where I live. Holmes go for 800k to over 1.5 million where I live in Southern Ontario.

If you cant cover all that with 5k a month youre not poor, youre just awful with money.

5k/mo. free and clear? Sure, easily doable.
5k/mo. subject to taxes and other payroll deductions? More difficult.

If my wife keeps her salary, yeah for sure

If we both make $60k, then that would be very tight but uh maybe

If household income were $60k but we kept our savings (aka we liquidate to pay off the mortgage), we could probably keep the house and survive with a lower standard of living

If just $60k and no savings: no we would need to move somewhere much cheaper

Lot of those arent even necessary expenses. Life insurance isnt necessary, disability insurance isnt necessary, union dues arent a thing for most people, child support isnt a thing for most people.

Carrying a 401k and life insurance is a luxury. If you use life insurance in a smart way then it basically acts as a retirement account. If you have a 401k and die then the money in the 401k account can be dispersed to dependents. Theres really no need for both.

Not trying to knock you but 60k isnt poor at all. If you manage your money correctly it is easily doable even after taxes.

Well using an actual income tax calculator and deducting $1K a month for those pretax items, you take home $35K a year in NYC still.

Lol thinking 401k is a luxury. Not all of us want to die at our desk.

Reading is hard. I said carrying a 401k AND life insurance. You dont need both. You can accomplish the same goal with one or the other.

The money in a 401k can go to your family when you die if necessary. If you dont die then the money that funds a life insurance account can be dispersed to you over the rest of your life and act as a retirement account. Money can also be pulled out of a life insurance policy

There is no need for both unless you for some reason think you need millions of dollars accessible at retirement age which is false.

Good to see you know nothing about finance. If I want to retire, a 401k is clearly much, much better.

Im literally licensed in health/life in over 40 states but keep trying to educate me on shit you know nothing about.

No shit a 401k is better which is why Ive said three times now you dont need both. Its nice to have both but not necessary at all.

And your license means shit. Anyone advocating life insurance as a potential retirement vehicle should not be taken seriously.

Are you high? Ive said multiple times now that a 401k is better but to say that it isnt possible to use a life insurance policy as retirement is dumb and flat out false. Its not ideal but it is easily possible.

Youre not smart. You just make vague statements to act like you are while really saying nothing. Just shut up.

Lol, possible to use as a retirement vehicle? Yes, it's possible, but it would be really dumb. Similarly, you could stuff all your money under a mattress as a retirement vehicle and that's possible, but also something very dumb that I wouldn't even mention as a potential retirement vehicle given how bad it is.

Simmer down, kid. You said something stupid and got called out for it.

You have no credentials whatsoever. Youre just a nerd talking shit. Get licensed and come talk to me maybe you can learn something.

I just did some math, and minimum wage of $11 * 8 hours a day = $88 * 5 days a week = $440 * 52 weeks = $22,880. So even if I worked full time, I wouldn't get $60,000.

So this is a joke topic, right?
