https://www.yahoo.com/news/california-law-bans-small-off-174600432.html

The new law will ban the sale of all off-road, gas-powered engines, including generators, lawn equipment, pressure washers, chainsaws, weed trimmers, and even golf carts. Under the new law, these machines must be zero-emissions, meaning they will have to be either battery-powered or plug-in, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Get wrecked, Gary's yard!

So uhhh... what exactly do people with generators as backup power do, then? The rest of that is manageable, but including generators seems like an absolutely ridiculous idea.

Is it? Battery powered lawn mowers suck. And good fucking luck with a battery powered chain saw during an emergency.

what price, exactly? These days Electric powered chainsaws and mowers, etc are just as powerful and efficient. Hell, in some cases a rechargeable battery is even easier to keep and maintain than a gas powered one.

Generators are necessary in a lot of cases. You cant just ban sales like you can with a chainsaw. Theres no real alternative to generators

The article does mention that some electric items cost nearly double the price of their gas counterparts, but at some point this bandaid needs to be ripped. If we keep forgoing switching to electric or getting rid of outdated industries for "the little guy" we're never going to do it. Manufacturers are just going to need to make their pricing more competitive on electric items.

the initial cost might be more, but over time, at least in my experience with both, electric has been better. Not needing to keep a can of gas around, the electric motor seems to last longer and require less maintenance. I'll gladly pay more upfront because the costs offset eventually.

Nope. Just bought my lawn mower this year. I went down the electric route and researched every mower that Lowes and Home Depot sells. Every electrical mower had horrible reviews and major flaws.

True. Not hurricanes. But a state that spends 90% of its time on fire probably shouldn't be limiting brush clearing equipment.

Yup, I plan on mowing tonight, with an electric mower.
It sounds, maybe as load as two box fans.

And also....Americans obsession with lawns is laughable.
We actually care more about our neighbors lawn than our neighbors.

This is the dumbest fucking thing I've read in this thread. You dump 3 inches of leaves on your yard then it's going to kill out the grass and hold in moisture that will produce fungus and mold that kills out whatever grass survived the perpetual darkness. I don't care where you live. Some of you must just have yards that are all weeds.

Wow, so it turns out your local weeds are actually pretty good at surviving the local environment compared to your shitty imported grass? baffling!

You know it was a joke, but plants and lawns do serve a purpose besides "looking nice." They prevent soil erosion and limit airborne dust. And this law affects the entire state, not just "suburban lawns."
