That wasn't really a "twist", that was well-known, and the complete selling point. The only way you couldn't have known is if you somehow had heard nothing about the game, and played it for the first time on emulator, or used with the cartridge only.

You wouldn't even know it was a twist unless you read the booklet.

edit: nm, I'm referring to DKC, not DK for the Gameboy.

And yet still consistently underlooked. So many levels, so many of them good, such smooth controls, nothing in the way of your pure platforming experience.

I remember being really satisfied with that game all the way to the final boss fight.

That said, 100 levels is a long ass slog that I'm not sure I could ever do again for one game.

Plus, I'm not remembering any kind of secret twist at the beginning? Unless you're referring to how they presented things at the end of level 4 and transitioned to level 5. That was cool af.

It's confusing that I beat that game, but the DK64 version absolutely bodied me.

It was a Gameboy game. The first four levels are the original arcade game, but DK gets up in the middle of the victory music and carries Pauline off again. Then there are 97 more levels with new mechanics that make it a kind of puzzle platformer.

The DK64 version was the NES version where you die if you fall more than like 4 blocks and can't handstand to block the springs.

I got lucky. I just found it at a park, with no one around to claim it. Same with Ducktales 2, and Megaman Zero 2 for the gba, on three separate occasions.

There is absolutely no excuse for them not offering a Super Game Boy display option.

The first four levels of the game are recreations of the original arcade game's four levels. After you beat the last one and it looks like you'd rescued Pauline just like in the original game, DK gets right back up and kidnaps her again, and the real game starts there.

Very well-made game. The length was a little too long as mentioned, but very fun. 2nd best remake after Zero Mission imo. The original DK was good unlike Metroid, so that's why I give Zero Mission the nod.

I thought it was a straight port until that happened. It really caught me off-guard.

It'd be like playing Super Mario Bros. only to have Bowser hop up out of the lava and recapture Peach.

Why would you not expect something that looks identical to another thing to behave similarly?

I bought it second hand with no box. The title says Donkey Kong. Not Donkey Kong '94, not Donkey Kong Remix, not Super Donkey Kong. It just says Donkey Kong. I plug it into the Super Game Boy and it has an arcade overlay. Nice attention to detail, Nintendo. All the more reason to think it's a port. The first four levels are directly lifted from the arcade... and then the fallen ape gets back up and recaptures the girl.

Yeah. I bought the game for $5 wanting to play the level that was missing from the NES game. I had no idea I was looking at a long (and very fun) game which would see Mario and Donkey Kong battling it out in several different settings.

I think the Super Gameboy connection is also worth mentioning here. I know its super outdated now, but back in 94 the SGB was a cool little piece of equipment. Being able to play GB games on a big screen was in and of itself pretty revolutionary at the time, and games like DK94 that took advantage of increased colors and features were quite fun.

So yeah, at the time this game hit many of the right buttons.

Too many gamers regard portable games like those on the GB, or even newer stuff like on the 3DS, as akin to mobile games. It's not a real game, it's just something to hold you over until you can get back to your TV.
