They do realize this is a franchise that's built around speedrunning, right?

Metroid isnt built around speed running. Wtf? Nintendo doesnt make their games to cater to a <1% portion of the player base.

It kind of is. From the very first game, you got "rewarded" by having a low playthrough time.

This whole "it's short therefore not worth 60 dollars" idea that I've seen thrown around regarding Dread (and other games) only make sense to me if the person making it views finishing the main story in a game the goal itself and once they've done that they're just gonna throw the game away and congratulate themselves on a job well done and move on to the next game and do the same.

For the vast majority of people, that is the goal of a video game. Most people aren't going to bother 100%ing it or replaying it multiple times.

To be honest, the reported 8 hours actually seems a bit longer than I'd expect from a 2D Metroid.

Honestly, in this day and age, Metroid is a thing of the past.

There have been too many top notch Metroidvanias in the past few years to give a shit about a dead franchise at this point.

I understand that people actually do that, but I feel like if you do, you should realize that your view on video games basically ensures that anythign that isn't a giant sandbox or girthy rpg will have low time to dollar value.

That's literally what most gamers do. Hell, most games never get completed because people drop them. Look at any achievement list where the top of the list goes from the "start the game" trophy to the "beat the game" trophy. Most people drop off within 15 hours. And even the people who make it to the last chapter might still have a chunk just drop off entirely due to lost interest or something new coming out.

It's part of why those "8 hour easy-ish action story" campaigns you beat in two sittings are so popular. There's no real time commitment needed and there's constant progress.

Actually, that also ties in to why clicker and auto games got so popular. Constant positive reinforcement even without doing anything.

10-12 hours is about all I can stomach from a single player campaign anyways. I used to love those 100+ hour games but I'm an adult with a wife and a kid and I only game a few hours on the weekend when I have time to myself. The idea of starting a massive open world game seems nauseating, bc I know I'll simply never complete it.

Pretty much every single 2D Metroid games features a bunch of shortcuts and sequence breaks deliberately put there for speedrunning.

No because it wasn't a sidescroller, graphics were top notch, had alot of replayability, and averaged 10hrs on the first run.

Yeah, dude

Clear sign that some people do not understand the principals, elements, & staples of the series. Its akin to complaining that Resident Evil is just another zombie game. Way backwards.

I have a family to take care of and much less free time these days. Sometimes it's nice to play and finish something shorter than say Persona 5 Royal which I've been trying to finish for months.

Most of the people complaining about the price tag were never going to play it anyways. They just want to feel superior for having played Hollow Knight or Ori. I actually saw a lot of animosity towards the game from Hollow Knight fans when it was revealed at E3. Guess theyre bitter about not getting their DLC, but man, Ive waited 19 years for this game

I'm pretty mixed about it in the end. I played the 3DS remake of Samus Returns and liked it at first, but the melee counter mechanic felt pretty gimmicky after a while. So if that one plays a big role here in not sure if I'll wanna get it.

Theres no reason to reassess anyones enjoyment of Metroid, other than figuring out how to handle heavy narrative in a normal way (so, not like a comic book like zero mission, which was cool but its not right) ~ Other M & Corruption fell flat a little, and I think were all still a little confused about Fusion.

On that note. I find appropriate to add something thats been on my mind. Guys. What Fusion was was really displaying how the Metroid formula can work with basically everything that isnt Metroid.

  • The dialogue box extravaganza that was every game on the GameBoy Advance.
  • The weird sprites talking to each other with really short cutscenes & fake 3D graphics thing.
  • The colors and the weird alien tinge everything has, at an attempt to create depth & an organic feel.
That was every Gameboy Advance game. They just.... well..... fused it with Metroid & split the concepts with Zero Mission, going Light Anime & Dark Anime for aesthetic respectively.

And all the realism went into Prime. Those were the big 3. They played it safe for the first Prime, did a kind of a safari thing with silent exposition and focused on the tragedy of the chozo, doing a Shadow Tower thing where the further you get into the game, the more youre really just following the story of other characters in the world, but at the end of the day you accomplish your mission, and it all gels really nicely with the intro which segues into a discovery phase about whats happening in the environment. But that isnt really a story, tbh. And thus it isnt exactly Metroid enough. Metroid has story. Even if they downplay it to the utmost extent.

So, from what Ive seen, it looks like Dread did the smart thing and well.... did exactly that. They drew from other successful franchises and learned from what works and what doesnt to create something actually relevant. Metroid deserves that. I think I see a little Halo in there. Doesnt look like Samus will do a whole lot talking. I see the Link in her new eyes. Lets hope this is what it looks like.
