Or do they usually give you a warning that you need to do better?

Yes you can but your manager will usually have a sit down with you prior to evaluate your performance and steps they can take to increase your performance. If nothing improves then yes, you can be let go.

It really depends on the field, clique, job security, management style, etc. I've worked in some jobs where slugs who are "in" with the right people get away with murder, and others that evaluate your performance Office Space style with sheets and data every quarter.

In my case they usually transfer you to a designated team of poor performers with twice the support and more time with the supervisor and 3 months you don't improve you're dunzo

Generally depends but yes. Supervisors will usually talk with you to improve or do things differently beforehand though. Also if you feel that you're not really understanding something you should ask for help.

From personal experience and just research,

I've been fired a long time ago where no warning was given. That was a blue collar job. I'm glad I left.

Another time more recently, they did sit down to talk about performance maybe once a month.

Some jobs will actually give you a form to sign letting you know they talked to you with HR in some capacity or it's recorded and they put you on what's called a Performance Improvement Plan or PIP. Other times it's informal and they tell you your performance is getting worse. It really just depends on the company.

If you're out on a PIP, start applying for another job. Especially if your manager doesn't like you. They can out really high b.s. expectations to meet-but they are usually set to fail anyway, to the point that one mistake could fire you.. But honestly, you will know when things are going south and that the writing will be on the wall. If coworkers complain about you, if you are left out if meetings, if your tasks are redistributed, if your manager gets mad at you for every little thing and tries to micromanage you.

Note that in At-Will states, you can be terminated/laid off for a y reason, but generally I'd the company is stable, they will fire you for performance reasons... or if your manager hates you, they will do what they can.

Not where I work they don't, especially not right now. So many bad employees in every department. But they are so shorthanded that as long as you are willing to show up they'll have a check with your name on it.
