A Columbus police narcotics officer accused of trafficking more than eight kilograms of fentanyl was ordered held in jail by a federal magistrate judge pending trial after federal prosecutors said he is a danger to the community and a flight risk
Marco Merino, 44, was arrested Tuesday on federal charges that accuse him of trafficking in cocaine and fentanyl, and accepting bribes of thousands of dollars to provide "protection" for drug shipments.
Merino and 33-year-old John Kotchkoski, a fellow narcotics detective, are at least the eleventh and twelfth Columbus police officer to face criminal charges since 2019, a review by The Dispatch found. The pair, who graduated the Columbus police training academy together, join three other city police officers who've faced federal charges during that time.

Very reminiscent of the NYPD running heroin during the 60s and 70s.

But is rather indicative of a culture of criminality within the PD. If 12 people are facing charges it's pretty safe to say that a large chunk of the department is aware that some shady shit is going down.

I'm saying the corruption needs to be burned out to the roots for the population to ever trust anyone in law enforcement ever again. The way they "win" is to stop doing this shit and come down hard as possible on cops who do this shit as well as those of enable or tolerate it.
If it were one or two cops I'd sure it's just them running an illegal side gig selling the shit they bust people for. Cops have done that for ages. Again see the NYPD and their heroin operation in late 60s early 70s. When you have 12 in a single department you cannot pretend that it's not indicative of a much larger problem within that PD. Well I guess you can, but it would certainly be a rather spurious claim.

That is a goddamn lie. They vast majority of people shooting up dirty 30s know exactly what they are. Being a successful drug dealer means repeat customers. If they are all dying because they don't know there is a fatal amount of drugs in them, that would be a problem.

It's 12 people over the course of nearly three years out of nearly 2,000 officers. That is hardly an indication of a culture of criminality.

The federal mandatory minimum sentence for distribution of some amount of heroin that leads to grievous harm or death is twenty years.

I'm gonna school you on the dope game real quick.

Fentanyl isnt laced into things unknowingly. There are 2 ways fentanyl is sold on the streets.

1) Cut into heroin- fentanyl has been cut into heroin for the past 40 or so years. If you are a heroin user in 2021, the odds of getting some heroin without fentanyl in them is so low that you'd have to had been living under a rock for over a decade (and hence you wouldn't be addicted to heroin).
2) "Pressies"- which are either fake oxy 30 pills or Dilaudid pills that are actually fentanyl. They press these in Mexico, and can be super fucking strong.
The thing is, most dealers call these "dirties" or "pressies" so people know that, they just do not care.

Blame the DEA/FDA and your local state medical board for this because 10 years ago there was no need for fake pressed pills. There were enough real ones to go around and everyone was happy. Tbh though I know a hell of a lot more people dead from mixing methadone and benzos than doing pressed pills with fentanyl.

Fentanyl is def getting in the cocaine supply, but I read its more because they cut and weigh both drugs on the same table without cleaning in between, not them intentionally combining the two. You only need a speck of fentanyl to kill you.
