I tried to ask for my old prescription from a place I got my eyes checked at in 2018 to use that for new glasses but learned by law you can only use a prescription to make glasses for 1 yr (or 2 yrs in some cases?). I haven't gotten my eyes checked since then and have had my glasses for so long that I didn't know about it. This feels like extortion because my current prescription works fine and when I went in 2018 it barely changed. So basically if I pay for an eye exam I better get my glasses between that 1 yr period or I wasted my money in a way if I don't have vision insurance. Oh the things you learn when you gotta handle all this yourself as an adult....crazy world. I realize somewhat why they do this but if you don't have a driver's license or car it shouldn't be required...maybe have a contract that you can use old prescriptions if you understand the consequences and what you can't do.

How dude, the place just refused to give me my prescription. I have no numbers whatsoever unless I can find the paper. I don't have glasses for fun.

*I guess if I just want to get my current frame replaced keeping current lenses I could do that, but that would involve going into a physical store and making sure the dimensions match with my new frame. Though there is 1-3 deep scratches that I would still have so I don't want to keep the lenses probably, even if
it'll be expensive.

Even then it seemed by law and wouldn't even online companies be required to check that your prescription is current? Would they really just be ok with inputted numbers?

So, I got some info from reddit

> I think you misunderstood. It's actually a federal rule that optometrists must give prescription information to their patients. Not sharing the measurements is illegal.

So I say demand that info

Are your current glasses on the fritz, or are you trying to get like prescription safety glasses or contacts?

If it's the former, then an optometrist center may be able to do the repair.

The frames are missing a nosepiece (so I have it balancing on one side only, works, but (and slightly rusting even....).)

I think that's following the exam, not at any time.

doesn't it cost very little for an eye exam, (and is likely 100% covered by insurance)? and they not only check your vision but also for various debilitating eye problems.

It isn't extortion, I worked at an optometrists for 2 years. You can't establish if your current prescription 'works fine'. It's not 'wasting your money' to get your eyes checked, you're supposed to get them checked every two years if you wear glasses. Getting your eyes checked is also for general eye health, not simply for establishing a prescription. You're still a liability if you're not driving. Even if there was a 'contract', do you understand the implication of letting someone leave a medical office with imperfect vision?

welcome to being an adult with imperfect vision, go get an updated prescription. no office will release your old prescription to you without putting a big EXPIRED stamp on it. next time, keep a personal copy if you want to fill your prescription online. Still, I recommend trying on frames in the office so you get a good fit. Write down the model # if you want to buy them cheaper online.

Online companies don't give a shit, they're just trying to make $$$. So are boutique glasses shops, but at least you're getting proper service. Online is OK if you have an extremely consistent prescription and know exactly what you need, but you also might up getting complete shit lenses with terrible coatings that will be crackling within 1-2 years. Glasses are a medical device. You can't just wing it. I'd recommend a cheaper location like Walmart or Costco for good cost-effective glasses/tests.

I finally got a new pair of glasses a couple weeks ago. My last pair I got in 2013. The anti-reflective coating was starting to flake off. I didn't even keep them like I usually do with my old glasses, I dropped them in the donation bin. The lenses were crap but the frames were probably still usable (and they were expensive frames, Flexon).

Fun fact: After about 5-6 years Transitions lenses will slowly begin to turn yellowish, growing darker with time.

Costco will replace the nose pads for free, even if you didn't buy the glasses there.

You can also buy a massive repair kit from Amazon with literally hundreds of nose pads and thousands of screws AND tools for like $15.
