Ground beef is not steak and should not be cooked like steak. Eating it rare is legit dangerous and hamburgers should always be cooked well.

This isn't me being picky or whatever, it's literal science. You can eat rare steak because the uncooked surface area is inside and thus protected from bacteria. Ground beef is entirely exposed to open air all throughout, and so you have to cook everything, not just the outside of the patty.

I am 42 and have been doing the same my whole life almost. My mother is in her 70's and started when she was young also. Her mother lived until she was 88 when she died from a doctor giving her an accidental overdose, but she ate raw beef her whole life also and never had any problems from it.

It all depends on how the meat is processed. If your using ground beef from the supermarket, then you always want to cook it well done. But if your making it fresh, grinding your own ground meat then its perfectly fine to eat it medium-rare if you like the flavor/texture. The reason for that is that the insides of freshly ground beef hasn't had any chance to develop bad bacteria, whereas something storebought has been sitting in the cooler ground up for at least a week, developing all that stuff that will make your gut rot.

I eat less red meat, more veggies/grains and drink lots of water.

The rarer the better. This includes the bun. If the bun was baked, it's too well done. That's the only way to have a hamburger.
