Just look at Virtua Fighter 1 on saturn. Or any n64 game. Now compare that to soul caliber on dc. Every problem with the ugliness of early 3d, it was smoothed out by 2000.

the only other thing i can think of that improved is not even a console thibg. Tvs went hd and games adapted. Thats hardly a pstriple innovation.

now they try to convince you that things like ray tracing is important at all. Fuck them, its the industrys fault. Lets cater to dark soles elitists, who most of them watch on twitch and dont beat themselves. Cater to the twitch views instead of making games people enjoy.

im just gonna play shenmue.

Let me put in one other innovation that mattered before the industry got greedy and destroyed it.

facial animations got better until they got worse. Nothing worse than seeing a real actors face on a 3d model, yuck.

Although, I feel like the original Xbox took the graphical look of the Dreamcast and carried it forward really well in the early 2000s

Agreed but other than hd, what did they do? Also i love how it took them till 2021 to get on the ssd train (thats from 2010 i think). And i especially love how Ill go to play a 360 game and magically it has more loading now! Wow thats lucky, almost like you should get a new console to fix it!

did you happen to see it in egm? I remember that exact moment. the quote is these are actual in game graphics. As a final fantasy player, i always wanted a game with fmv graphics. And there it was, on dreamcast.

At most you could argue the jump between generations was biggest (although probably not even that), but that graphics had peaked? Nah.

I think modern equivalents often fail to capture that quality of art style / animation (and that matters potentially more than raw graphical power or the latest technical innovations).

Peaked is an odd take, but no game has impressed me more graphically than Shenmue did. The cats LOOKED REAL.

I actually tried to find a bad looking screenshot of Shenmue a while ago for a joke, and I couldn't find one. They all looked great.

Also some games just look too soft imo. Games that rely on TAA in particular. Turning off AA helps but it does make the jaggies noticeable even at 4k. Rdr2 had this issue for me. I ended up going to nvidia control panel and increasing sharpness which does worsen performance

There are a bunch of other games that looked too soft for my liking. Most of them are post 2018 games. Not sure what's up. Maybe the first game that i noticed being too soft was Witcher 3 back in 2015 with low and normal sharpness. I crank that slider to high sharpness.

Go to youtube and type in ps3 rpgs. They are sooo complicated! I seen this one game that was an rpg with guns. And every attack had like 13 ways to shoot the gun, with different inputs for every one

is that why people liked ff7? Because of how complicated it was? No, you liked the fmv intro and that hooked you. Poor kids these days.

I think it was the first system that allowed human character models to look great. Since that era, the majority of graphical improvements have been in the HD textures and tiny details--and lots and lots of lighting and particle effects.

I'd agree that Soul Calibur along with Sonic Adventure and a few other launch games for Dreamcast at the time had jaw dropping graphics its a bit silly to compare them to newer games.

Soul Calibur looks dramatically worse side by side than it's own sequels along with an endless number of games from more recently with all sorts of art styles.

I saw a trailer for a recent game a month or two ago that had fantastic 2D graphics. I cant remember the name of it though. It looked kind of anime inspired and I think it was a metridvania

Soul Calibur 6 is actually known for having 'last gen graphics' but even ps3'ish graphics are way ahead of Dreamcast.

I still don't think thats right. Maybe they hit unprecedented gains that we haven't seen in a while, but between things like unreal engine 5 and the newest graphic cards we might actually be hitting a peak level for graphic soon

I had a ton of fun with my Dreamcast. I loved to play Sonic Adventure 1+2, Virtua Tennis, Crazy Taxi, and my Sega game collection with Virtua Cop 2 and Shining Force on it.

I think you are convoluting Cel-Shaded, VS Video game graphics VS hyper-realism.

Cel-Shading is a particular style.

For as much as I love the Dreamcast, I can only think of five games I actually like on it. Sonic Adventure 1 and 2, Shenmue 1 and 2, and Jet Set Radio.

But man, that's a good set of five games.
