Gabrielle Union is opening up about something that happened in Croatia.

The 48-year-old actress got candid in an interview with People about a trip she went on with friends to the country back in 2019.

We wanted to recreate Cerseis steps from Game of Thrones, she said of visiting Dubrovnik, Croatia, as recounted in her new memoir You Got Anything Stronger?.

She said that her group entered what they thought was a gay bar to get some drinks, until they realized there was Jim Crow memorabilia and Neo-Nazi patrons.

Ive never experienced that level of hatred and the threat of physical violence, she said, adding that a group followed them down the street afterward.

It was such a jolt. And the fear and adrenaline of what happened left us all numb.

She said the heartbreaking and terrifying situation was not unique to her time in Croatia.

To go through every instance is to take you through every day of my life. There are microaggressions and there are all out assaults. Thats what it is to be a person of color in this country, she explained.

We think were post racial but were not. And that is beyond disappointing. I dont think people understand the violence that comes with racism, whether its if youre being chased or youre having to watch someone wear blackface to collect a paycheck. Its violent.

She also wrote about her experience in Hollywood in the memoir.

Were still talking about the first Black this, the first Latina this and the first Asian this. Thats not progress.

Why are we still having firsts? It should be something that shames us all.

They roll out the list of the top ten highest paid actors and you see a couple of people on there. But show me the top 100 paid actors. What does that look like? There are a lot of people who turn a blind eye to racism. But silence is complicity. When you see something, whether its sexist or homophobic or transphobic, say something. This should be a call to arms to have real radical impactful change, she explained.

That's terrifying. Glad her and her group made it out okay.
