This is great news! Finally money going back to the people. Once it's permanent, double it and have billionaires pay for it. Down with the false gods.

Married couples with children already get enough tax breaks. It's time something is done for those that aren't married or have children.

Don't divide the people. There's plenty of money to go around.

Then give some of it to those of us who don't have kids. Also, you aren't going to make billionaires pay for shit since they own the government.

You aren't going to be paying into it with higher taxes unless you're in a high enough tax bracket where you won't even notice the loose change leaving your pockets. You don't lose anything here.

In fact, you benefit because more stable households means more reliable productive members of society paying taxes in the future. It causes your portfolio to increase in value and your cities to grow.

Why are we rewarding poor decision making?

It started out in response to the economic decline caused by the shutdowns, and I guess they're making it permanent because they saw the amount of kids that were getting more nutrition and help and etc. It causes stability.

The alternative is for the State to regulate who can and can't have kids, and fuck that lol

See, if this could be guaranteed, my wife and I could consider having a child. But money is the main concern, especially since she would probably end up working less.

If it gets extended to 2025, it'll be a popular enough program that even if a Republican wins in 2024 they'll be remiss to really go after it in earnest. Like how social security is popular with everyone on both aisles.

i dont understand the payments.

its a tax credit

so you should adjust your w4 so get less taxes deducted from your paycheck or get it applied when you do your taxes.

where are people getting 300 dollars from? are they just giving parents 300 dollars and then come tax season, they won't get it because they already got it? is that it?

if i adjust my w4, and still get the checks, will i end up oweing that money back come tax season?

The money is distributed as a tax credit and is redeemable monthly, in that they send you the check or direct deposit it. So the money is yours. Come tax season, your tax report should show that you had that tax credit, but it won't reduce or affect your taxable income.

I do not know if everyone has to get it redeemed monthly, or if that's optional. If optional and some people elect that for some reason, it'll get applied against any tax obligations or given as a refund at tax season.

So yeah, anyone who is getting the money now won't get anything extra from it at tax season because they're getting the tax credit now in monthly allotments to help with child expenses.

If you adjust your W4 to have less withholding, depending on your specific situation and numbers you may increase your tax obligation because you won't have paid enough in taxes throughout the remainder of the year. It's hard to say what the case will be without knowing more, but I recommend taking everything I said with a grain of salt since I'm not a CPA. Consult one, they'll be able to set you right. But this is how I understand it to work from looking into it on family member's behalf.

thanks for explaining. i think i get it. my works w4 paperwork still has the tax credit as 2000 so ill probably try to get the checks and just figure it out come tax season.

or i guess just say i have 2 dependants. id only be like 400 off... or something.

i dunno

My understanding of that is that it will show up as a tax credit ahead of time since technically it already exists as one, it's just being redeemed monthly now to alleviate the lockdown-induced economic hardship.

In any case, historically I'd bumped my # of allowances up by 1 more than what the paperwork recommends so I can get as close to $0 refund as possible. Because I want to have more money each month, rather than get a refund. But again, would consult with CPA for your specific situation. Probably would only cost you like $50 to chat with one in your area.

yes, like i said brownie points. every democrat that votes for this will bring it up in their next campaign commercial.

now lets see movement on legislation to try to fix the shithole infrastructure in this country and work to do our fair share to turn climate change around. since both of those things are going to affect far more people.

You dont use up your whole tax credit with the $300 payments. It's like half. They did this while simultaneously increasing the total tax credit amount.

So they'll still get quite a bit cone tax season even though they collect that $300 a month. It's less than the lump sum they're used to collecting. Like around 70% iirc.
