or like, what's its point?

finally opened an account the other day just so i could finally ask questions on some of the advice-based subs and stuff

so far, i've noticed that some subs actually have a minimum karma requirement to post on, so i guess that's one, but other than that, are there any other practical uses?

is it pretty much just internet points otherwise?

Nothing. Some subs have the minimum karma requirements to weed out bots or trolls, but it's never more than just a handful of points.

i'm the type who usually gives everybody who replies to my topics on other forums a "like" or whatever as a courtesy

You can upvote or downvote as many posts in a thread as you want, though there are subreddits that disable voting unless you're subscribed.

You are limited in total upvotes. Reddit just lies to you that they count.

They look like the upvote went through, but it's fake.

You can upvote 100 times. And it looks like all 100 have +1s. But only the first small amount affect anything. (the last 85 people won't see you did the upvote/downvote)

It is useful for a lot of things. A Karma is a good thing for a Community: you can tell who is in and who is popular. And who got and who did well.

Than there is the personal pleasure or satisfaction. Excuse my faulty vocabulary.

And I think you get some Reddit cash with this Karma.
