damn, didn't know that was a thing. i know in germany they are taxed based on engine size every year, probably have to do inspections like this too.

Right. I think new cars should be exempt from any inspections for like 4 years or 60000 miles.

The emissions thing has merit. CA does it every 2 years for cars of a certain age.

Having lived in the Northeast a few years for grad school, the car inspection thing is bullshit. The most rusted and questionably roadworthy cars I have ever seen are in the Northeast. Some of these cars legit have parts flying off of them, yet pass inspection *cough* for a fee.

I never removed my CA plates while in the Northeast.

They inspect your car every year? Seems excessive. In California, cars over 8 years old require an emissions test every other year. No other inspections beyond that though.

Yup. I have two 2019 cars I bought brand new, and they need yearly inspections and emissions (for the gas one) just like my old third 2006 beater car. Its bullshit.

I'm conflicted about it because it does have its place. Some people just do not maintain their vehicle which can be a danger to everyone. It should be free, though. We already pay property taxes on it.
