Right? He doesn't care if i'm actually sick or not.

Employers shouldn't give us "use or or lose it days" if they don't expect us to use them. No blame for employees calling off.

Tc did you vote for or against unions?

Im a moderate on that. I am for employees having quality jobs but at the same time it should be up to the employers decide on what to give their employees

like youre just actively against your own self interests?

I mean I dont see it that way to be honest. I just believe that the free market should dictate wages and benefits on both sides

Employees have the right to choose whether they like what is offered by prospective employers and on the other hand. employers are responsible for attracting employees by offering whatever they can to get people to sign.

^A union definitely does interfere with that

look at all the overpaid longshoremen, government workers, or other guys who are paid above market rate

Better yet, why do offices still differentiate between "sick" days and "vacation" days? Just have one big pool of PTO no questions asked.

From what I've seen, it's a number of different things in combination.

Jobs that have high absenteeism, in my experience, are typically jobs that are along these lines:
  • The job doesn't pay much
  • Workers don't really feel much responsibility or passion for what their job is. Retail workers at clothing stores don't really care about whether the jeans are folded and stacked neatly. They just do it as part of the job. Retail workers at McDonald's don't really care about people getting their food. It's just a part of the job.

If you're making like $8/hour and you're set to work an 8 hour shift, that's $64 before taxes (assuming your shift is a full 8 hours and not 7 with an hour lunch), probably about $40 to $50 afterward. Sometimes the bullshit you have to put up with at these jobs just isn't worth that extra $40 to $50, and people would rather take an extra day to decompress.

People who work in jobs they either got certifications for or went to college for typically feel more of a sense of responsibility and pride in what they do.

Well, the employer decided to staff in such a way that you get fucked over if someone calls out. That's not the fault of the employee utilizing the time off that they're given in the employment contract.

You can't blame an employee for a system that they had no hand in creating. Go bitch to your boss

1. Employment is a two-way street. This isn't charity, they aren't the hand that feeds me. I render a service, they compensate me. Often, that compensation includes PTO.

2. If I am provided personal/sick and/or vacation time, and that time is approved, it is no one's business how I'm using it.

3. The notion that you're "better" because you don't use part of your compensation, or judge others for using there's, is merely you being taken advantage of. Period.
