Ill pick an artist that I know I enjoy a lot, and go and listen to their full discography from beginning to end. I

get to hear where they were when they started, what they were striving to do in the starting days and what they actually accomplished in the end, and all the growth in between.

I also like to put myself mentally in the / time period each album was released. I can get a sense of what the album meant to both the music industry around them at the time, and what it meant to the bands legacy itself.

so far Ive done this with David Bowie, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath (Ozzy Era only, so far), Pink Floyd, Rush, Allman Brothers Band, Jimi Hendrix, The Police, Radiohead, Foo Fighters, Weezer, Green Day, Blink-182

Ill probably do a full listen to The Who and / or Fleetwood Mac sometime soon, maybe RHCP as well, but some of their early stuff is really rough imo

Anyone else do this?

have any recommendations?

I haven't done this, but my friend has, rated every song too

It's definitely something I have considered but haven't gotten around to yet

Anyways a few recommendations are The Doors, Queen, Deep Purple, Tool, Alice in Chains, and Primus (I have more if you want them but I'll start off with those)

I like to do it with one hit wonder artists or artists I only have one or two songs from. I'm usually disappointed and stick to those one or two songs I like but sometimes there's some real bangers.

I personally enjoyed Scatman John, Aqua, and Wheatus when I went through their discography but I don't recommend them if you don't like their stuff in the first place.

I don't really see the point in listening to more of a one hit wonder's catalog. I'll hear people say "they're actually pretty decent" but everyone has at least some deep cuts that are better than the hits, it's not some weird phenomenon. There's no shortage of good music to find out there, I'm not gonna waste my time finding out if like fucking Smash Mouth is actually awesome

so do you only listen to singles? Or does an artist need 2 hits before you're willing to listen to their deep cuts? Seems kinda arbitrary to not listen to one-hit-wonders specifically.

I feel like it's pretty self explanatory lol, like are you really gonna see what else the macarena people got up to (not that I'm saying the macarena is even good but uhh one of the original examples was the band that did Barbie Girl so I'm not sure we're clearing a high bar here)

its not as self explanatory as you think lol. so you do only listen to singles?

If I enjoyed the Macarena, why wouldnt I spend a few minutes looking to see if I like another song by the same group? I liked the song Somebody that I used to Know, so I listened to some more Gotye, and found an artist I enjoyed. Like 90% of the artists I like I began listening to because I knew one song by them (a single, from a commercial, from a playlist, from a soundtrack, etc), and was interested in hearing more.

I listened to "All the Rowboats" by Regina Spector, and fell in love.

I went out looking for more of her music, but unfortunately, none of the songs I listened to hit as hard as that one did

NIN would be a good candidate but everything after they peaked with The Fragile can be a bit overdone imo.

other suggestions: Faith No More, Mountain Goats, Doors, Alice In Chains, Tom Petty, And Warren Zevon.

Some of them get into the industry and end up having allot of prolific work behind the scenes as writers and whatnot. That guy from New Radicals comes to mind. But songs end up getting passed along or written for someone else in mind. Might be something to consider for TC if they want to branch out to that aspect of some of their work but it might be allot harder to collect it or find if its not credited or credited weirdly.

I'm back and sad to report that after about 2 or so albums, nothing really stands out to me. It's all pretty much just Latin music so if you like that kind of thing, Los del Rio might be something to check out.
