Taliban tell Afghan women to stay home from work because soldiers are 'not trained' to respect them

Fear is mounting for women and girls in Afghanistan after the Taliban told working women to stay at home, admitting they were not safe in the presence of the militant group's soldiers.

Taliban spokesperson Zabiullah Mujahid said at a news conference on Tuesday that women should not go to work for their own safety, undermining the group's efforts to convince international observers that the group would be more tolerant towards women than when they were last in power.

The instruction came the same day that the World Bank halted funding in Afghanistan, citing concerns about the safety of women, and within hours of the UN calling for a "transparent and prompt investigation" into reports of human rights abuses since the Taliban takeover.

Mujahid said the guidance to stay at home would be temporary, and would allow the group to find ways to ensure that women are not "treated in a disrespectful way" or "God forbid, hurt." He admitted the measure was necessary because the Taliban's soldiers "keep changing and are not trained."

"We are happy for them to enter the buildings but we want to make sure they do not face any worries," he said. "Therefore, we have asked them to take time off from work until the situation gets back to a normal order and women related procedures are in place, then they can return to their jobs once it's announced."

Its not the new normal yet. Things will get far worse for women and LGBT over there before things stabilise at a new normal.

Dont think anyone cares what happens there unless US troops get killed. 60 Afghans died in that suicide bomb and all people care about is the 12 Americans.

This is what happens when you let a terrorist organization pretend to be a legitimate government and treat with them as such. It's a goddamn disgrace what we and the world have allowed to happen there.

The soldiers not being trained to respect women is pretty believable. That would have been really low on the priority list for getting them trained to fight and kill.

My question is how sincere is the leadership being? And even if they are sincere, can they actually get things to change? Like is there enough flex in the beliefs theyve been promoting to be able to do this without costing the leadership the support of the soldiers?

They are putting on an act because the World Bank cut them off.

When was the last time Afghanistan has had a legitimate government? I know they havent had one since at least the mid 90s.

If the Taliban soldiers hurting or killing women is a concern making that a crime would be a good place to start.

I doubt they will though.

I mean, to be fair to the Taliban, I guess... this probably is a sensible precaution. The country is in chaos and their military is a loose collection of psychopaths. Even if the Taliban issued warnings to "respect women," there's absolutely no systems in place to make sure the soldiers follow those orders and most likely no procedure for disciplining soldiers who don't. We're not talking about a well regulated military here.

Well thats the thing, they have to make some sort of change because they need to be seen as legitimate, but they cant change too much or they lose their soldiers and then power.

Why is this your question when its plain to see they arent sincere at all. They didnt fight for decades just to drop their beliefs once they got back in power. My original statement stands firm. Just wait for news that women will be banned from going outside unless accompanied by a male. Thats roughly when we will see the new normal.

They seem to want to avoid being a pariah state like they were last time they were in charge. Like almost no countries recognized them and their super low standing on the global stage( and the lack of any allies) is what made it so easy for the US to invade. That requires some change. I certainly dont expect them to abandon their ideology, but some changes is within the realm of possibility.
