The DD base pay has been lowered as far as $2-$2.25 in some instances now. Its not worth the time and cost of gas at all unless customers are tipping well up front.

UberEats varies, but generally offers a much higher base pay on much of their deliveries (upwards of $6-8+, depending on how long the order has been bounced around and distance).

Grubhub generally pays similar to UE, if not a bit more, in most circumstances.

jeez. so assuming no tips, to make a livable wage, at least in my area, they'd need to do like 40+ deliveries a day

i guess they do need those tips.

Its more of a matter that your order might not be picked up at all if the drivers out at any given time see that the value is only $2-3, since we are able to see that up front. DD, shady company that they are, tries to encourage drivers that dont know any better to pick up these orders by having a top dasher program whereby you have to accept 70% of orders to stay in the program. Thing is though that the benefits are not really great at all, and there is certainly no financial incentive to take all those crap orders to stay with the program.

Drivers in the know will happily decline 80-90% of DDs orders and cherry pick ones only over a certain amount. Thats what I do, and my acceptance rate stays between 10-20%, so Im effectively declining 8-9 orders out of every 10 they try to throw at me.

UE has no such program, so in general most of the folks who have been doing it for a while just know to only accept the decent orders. UE is better than DD though when it comes to increasing the base pay over time if enough drivers decline, in order to try to get the order picked up.

So put another way.. drivers can absolutely cherry pick orders to get only the worthwhile ones. Depending on the market, and if they are doing multiple apps they can get $10-$25/hr. But there are slow and bad times, and if they are only doing one app, it can be lower than that though, of course.

Newer drivers that dont know any better and are accepting all orders might be making below minimum wage though, tbh.

When I did doordash I just cherry picked orders, I didn't do anything below $4.00. I had an acceptance rate of mid 20s but I still was getting a ton of orders regardless.

If an order is $2-$3 that means the person put $0 for the tip and it's just the delivery fee.
Doordash also has peak hour pay though where you can get an extra $2.50-$4.00 per delivery. Those were usually good times to make a quick $60-$80 in 2 hours.

No, DoorDash started hiding tips from the driver, so you have to take a gamble when ordering DoorDash if a driver is willing to take your order or not

More context here: This is very true, and DD does hide tips. Its an absolutely shitty practice, but they do not hide all of the tip. Examples:

  • Customer A leaves no tip. DD displays a payout of $2.25 to a driver. Driver declines the ridiculous order, and it will bounce around to other drivers and DD might slowly start to kick that pay up in $0.25 increments until it gets to a point where a driver will accept it. Or, it just never gets picked up.
  • Customer B tips $5. Total order is $7.25, and a driver picks it up because thats a good enough order for them. Note: other factors such as milage, ease/speed of pickup at the restaurant, and delivery location might all come into play and a driver might still decline your order
  • Customer C tips $20. DD displays the order as $8.50, effectively hiding the bulk of that generous tip. The driver wont see the full tip until after they deliver.
