Avoid 4 like the plague.

2 is considered the best (I personally haven't played 2).

3 is hit or miss (I personally like 3).

1 is pretty good.

2 still has a lot of the more GTA elements and vastly improved upon the first game but 3 moved the series more towards the zany bullshit that the series is known for. Both are fun in their own ways.

Seems like SR2 is the generally agreed-upon peak; it's the only one I've played, so I can't comment on the rest. I bought it out of a bargain bin around the time I was disappointed in GTA 4 for taking itself too seriously, and SR2 ended up being one of those rare games that genuinely took me by surprise by how enjoyable it was. Felt more like GTA than GTA itself did at the time, and it still has the single best / most in-depth character creator I've ever seen in a video game.

For me, SR2. It balances the wacky with the realism. Later games are fun, but they swing too hard in the wacky direction. There's nothing grounding the humor, so it doesn't land as well.

The customer characterization also takes a hit. For instance, I remember you could layer clothes in SR2, but you can't do the same in SR3 and 4. I spent a long time buying clothes and tattooes in SR2, not so much in the others.

It was the last serious one? That's not saying much. But 3 and 4 just got silly.

They're all great in their own way.

1 is like a direct GTA clone, just minus some more detailed features, but has the best customization of the 4.

2 is the best mix of serious and whacky gameplay, customization, story, etc. (my personal fav)

3 has great visuals and gameplay but lacks as much customization and story and definitely goes whackier

4 is complete whacky with almost no story/minimal customization but has easily the best gameplay

all imo of course.

4 has a story and more customization than the previous games, have you even played it?

3 and 4 are the best two games in the series. I guess technically you could count Agents of Mayhem since it does take place in the same universe and has Gat and Kenzie.

4 has a story in the same way the average platformer has a story. Most of the games missions are "do several of the minigames", there's not that many actual missions as such. It's fun, but let's not pretend there's anything more than a filler story to it.

2 on pc at least is a buggy crash ridden mess w/ none of the dlc.. there's a fan mod gentlemen of the row that fixes ALOT of the issues and supposedly the devs are finally working on a patch to fix the port but there's no ETA on release

Two is the series peak for me. It perfectly straddles the line of goofy and serious in a way that SR1 (which took itself too serious) and SR3 (which took nothing serious) did not.

Stillwater is one of my favorite open world cities in a game. It is big without being overwhelming. Has lots of variety, tons of secrets, and is surprisingly interactive. SR3's Steelport lacks basically all of that.

The game has outrageous customization for your character with a ton of clothing options and often times multiple options for wearing the clothing. Which is another area wear SR3 falls short.

It isn't entirely superior though. SR2's gameplay lacks polish, the gunplay and driving are both worse than SR3. They do the job, but they definitely leave something to be desired. And if you are playing on PC, the game needs a lot of extra technical tweaks to get it to run okay. It had a horrendously bad PC port.

If you want the more serious storyline, then start with 1. A lot of people consider 2 to be the best, but starting there massively spoils the ending of 1. So if you play 2 first, and love it enough that you want to go back and experience the original, you're going in, kind of knowing how some things play out.

My personal favorite was 3, just because it has some cool moments thanks to it's over the top nature. Like the MC (minor early game spoiler) diving through the front window of a plane mid flight, shooting several guys while floating through the plane, then flying out the back of it.

As far as SR1 goes, the game is fine...but has some pretty archaic gameplay. If you are really curious as to what happened, I would just YouTube the cutscenes. You aren't losing out on much from a gameplay perspective.

Have you actually played the game? There is a story and there are actual missions for each character you rescue, yes there are mini games to play but those are separate from the story and doesn't really further the plot.
