I never played Pokemon. How can Missingno ruin your game?

I know it's a glitch where the name is Missing No. as in Missing Number -- sorta like ERMAC / Error Macros from Mortal Kombat -- but I don't know the backstory on how it affects gameplay.

It was around the same time that I was reading about cheats and glitches about how to get Pikablu

Talk to the old man that gives you the catching tutorial, then immediately fly to cinnabar island. Walk to the right and uses surf to go up and down on the shore border until you run into it. You can also run into some super high level other pokemon.

I also think it glitches the 6th item in your inventory to give you 255 of it or something.

Missingno isn't all that difficult to come across by accident. In addition to the catching tutorial guy, you could also trigger its appearance by first trading a Pokmon in the Cinnabar Island lab.

I'm more amazed at how anyone figured out the Mew trick.

The fact that it was so ubiquitous is insane. Yeah message boards and aol existed but this was the dial up era of the internet. Only bill gates types even had it, much less a computer at home.

wrong. catching it and giving it a rare candy evolves it to a Kangaskhan.
Battling with it however fucks your save file up.

I was about to say this too. The Mew Glitch is actually remarkable and the instructions read like any other completely fake glitch posted on the internet in the early 2000s. It's so esoteric I'm still confused how the first person must have accidentally did it. Missingno is a little more understandable for someone to stumble upon, even though it's weird anyone would ever talk to the tutorial guy again.

The last bit being the important part. Just use it for duping etc and leave it the fuck alone.

It was one of the greatest things ever as far as I was concerned back in the day, if I would have know about the mew glitch I would have been in heaven. Instead I bought a game shark <_<

Didn't your older cousin tell you about it? The same older cousin told me about it and mew under the truck, which is why mew truck was so believed. Because it came from a trusted source who was right about missingno, so he had to be right about the mew under the truck, right? Right?

catching it won't do anything to the save file. but the moment you start a battle, it's all downhill from there.

I'm like 60% sure it was referenced in a strategy guide for the games. Nintendo Power may have also covered it to some extent.
